I'm sure her accent in the beginning was not American, but when they got to University Challenge and she said she was from the US, I was surprised.
Granted, she didn't have much to say the whole film but I wonder why they made the her American-Chinese rather than British-Chinese, particularly as the actress is British? I haven't read the book, is she American in that?

it did seem a bit stereotypical though- something for the yanks - a clever oriental girl- not really the norm in the uk. however they normalLY get more air time in us productions..
Overdue reply but, in the novel Lucy is from Minneapolis, and she serves initially as a plot device to further illustrate Brian's lack of worldliness when he first goes to university, insofar as he has never met an American and can't quite equate her Chinese heritage with her US accent and upbringing.
She also has a much larger role in the novel, at least as large as that of Patrick the team captain. Brian even ponders at one point whether he should not have gone out with her instead of Alice, before realising that he was in love with Rebecca all along.
Did they have to have her lug around that panda toy everywhere?

yes they had as in the book everytime the author talks about her he tells about the panda.
And remember the screenplay of this film is actually from the author of the novel who happens to work in television. (but to be fair thats about the only stuff he kept from his own novel in the film as so many things are different. Sometimes even details for no reason except the fact that the "hero" ( the author himself as its an autobiographical work) appears less as a total looser in the film than he his in the book. In the book Brian is a total penny less nerd, quite dumb, very shy. In the film they changed stuffs to make him appear less that way, for instance Rebecca say hello to him and recognize him . in the book Rebecca doesnt give a sh** about him and the nolife no friend Brian try to befriend her and is afraid she wont remember him from the 1st party. ( scene in the film: he is running to pass the test and Rebecca asks what's the hurry. Doesnt exist at all in book).
I read the book in the last 2 days and decided to check the movie as I still have the whole novel clearly in mind. On the back page it was written that the novel was supposed to be some "coming of age like the catcher in the rye but very funny". Thats why I bought this book. I can say that was total rubbish advertisement. The only stuff that made me laugh in the book was when the mother says " I was afraid you were gonna tell you are an homosexual " ( of course they replaced it by " gay " in the movie - of course one of the room mate is black in the movie while he 's not in the novel/reality)
I thought the same as the OP her American accent is none existent at the start :D
