Remake?
Hi, folks...
This may already been asked, but I remember watching a similar movie about a heavy train running fast and no brakes back in the 80s.... anyone remember the title?

You're probably thinking about Runaway Train (1985), starring Jon Voight, Eric Roberts, and Rebecca De Mornay: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089941/.
And Unstoppable is not a remake of it. Runaway Train has a slightly different premise, in that there was always somebody on the train, but for reasons I don't want to divulge, they're incapable of stopping it. Also, in a way, while the incident/situation is a crucial element to the plot, it's secondary to the real story of the movie as a whole. You'll have to see it for yourself to know what I mean.
Also, Runaway Train is entirely a work of fiction based on no real-life event whatsoever. Whereas Unstoppable, while still a work of fiction, is based on the true story of CSX 8888: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CSX_8888_incident
