The movie depressed the holy **** out of me...

That's not necessarily a knock. Coming-of-age films are a tough sell for me anyway because I came of age; it took a long time and it was a convoluted process and I'm not eager to relive it, not even vicariously.

It was nice to see Denis O'Hare in something other than a Law & Order episode though. His scene at the end was really touching.

haha. that amused me.

i didnt find this movie to be depressing. in fact, it was rather funny in some parts.

if you thought it was depressing, you havnt delved deep enough into the realm of bad indie flicks.

reply

Really?

I thought the movie was very charming, sad at some parts, funny and very very satisfying.

I think you're not watching enough movie. Watch a war movie if you want some real depression. Try the Flags of Our Father for mild and Saving Private Ryan for some extremeness.

You want depression ? Try Requiem for a Dream or A Serious Man ... This movie .. well it's kinda how you see it.

Notice the last few lines... it's OKAY to be anxious, it's OKAY to be wanting what you don't get.. but someday you WILL settle down to have the wisdom & be happy with what you have. This movie calmed me pretty much.

Fair enough. But I can watch a movie about serious drug addiction or a guy living a soul-crushing double life and it doesn't get into my head because I'm not a drug addict or living a double life.

Rocket Science hits a lot closer to home, I guess is what I'm saying.

But isn't the fact that it hits close to home reassuring – the fact that we can accept our limitations and still be happy with ourselves?

I didn't find this film depressing at all. In fact, I found it quite inspirational.
