Who wanted a happy ending?

I know the film wanted to be really realistic and not go for a happy ending, but It would have been really good to see Hal succeed in the debate tournament (or at least come close) and get back at Ginny. But no, the movie had to get overly-realistic and have him get pulled out of the tournament right when he brilliantly sung through his debate speech. After this , the film went downhill.

btw, I also stutter sometimes.

I don't know, I just watched it, and it seemed happy to me. He got much farther into the speech and in his words, "was killing in there" and he finally figured out how to just be cool with himself and his stutter. Not to mention the fact that he did sort of tell Ginny off - he seemed okay with it anyways. Oh...and he got his pizza.

reply

it would be better if the scene with pizza full of triump music. to him, getting pizza definitely something very worthy

reply

Yeah, really. Why make a movie that's different and truthful when they could've made one that stuck to the tried and true Hollywood formula that the studios have been churning out for almost a century? How stupid of them to not have the predictable "Guy gets the Girl" ending like 99% of the movies ever made? How dare they try to be original? The fools!

It's not even necessarily that. As a high school policy debater who used to date his partner and then had a horrific break up, I want to see things work out, since it so specifically relates to me. Normally, I'm a sucker for the realistic, sad endings, but just once I wanted a happy one. Maybe I just want a happy ending for my situation, which won't happen.

reply

or maybe you just watch the wrong movie.

i would be no worry if i were you. the happy ending formula got ways more movie than the sad one. you bound to see some if you keep watching.

reply

is it just me or have movies tried so hard to avoid cliches that they in them selves have created a new cliche...not being cliche.

I was expecting a happy ending, and couldn't see how the writer was going to contort the plot into one. I was so glad and surprised when there wasn't one. It's the reason I love this movie so much.

It was fresh, realisitic, raw, and I thought Reece Thompson played it perfectly. I'm really irritated I've not seen him in other things since.

I also feel that just because he didn't get his revenge doesn't mean it wasn't a happy ending. As another poster pointed out in a different thread, Ginny says "I upped your game, little man."

Hal was bigger, wiser, more confident by the end. Every writer knows the hero and villain are supposed to up each other's game, but this is one of rare occasions I have seen it done so wonderfully.

In short, I would argue it does have a happy ending - the fact that it wasn't formulaic and revenge motivated simply serves to lift this movie into the stratosphere, and I think it is a crime it is not as famous as Juno and a number of other Michael Cera vehicles.

The part when Ginny transferred school was the tipping point for me too. I lost interest because it was not explained more fully as to why. At the ending I either wanted them to get back together or for Hal to verbally tear Ginny down enought to make her cry. The ending let Ginny get off too easily, where it seemed to me that she could still feel justified in her poor treatment of Hal.

"...it was not explained more fully as to why."

Yes, it was.

Ginny planned the entire thing all along. The Indian Guy (IG) lost his debate partner, as she graduated. Ginny lost Ben. Together, they decided to weaken the team at Ginny's school, and then for her to transfer to IG's school and win together. This is why she tried finding weak candidates, including Hal, and then transferred. This is why Hal brought Ben back - to get back at her. It was all a ploy, from the very beginning.

You should watch the movie, again..

I thought this movie ended very well. A teenager crippled, not physically but in many other areas, is finally able to break free of a lot of the things holding him back. Look, it wasn't just about Ginny...
SPOILER ALERT: getting drunk and throwing a cello through her window didn't get any type of reaction from her, and seeing how these guys get emasculated by his mother and run away angry and/or crying, made him realize that he was no better. It wasn't just revenge on Ginny, but taking on everyone. Chances are they weren't going to win, but he had what it took to try. They get disqualified by an irate coach, he gets under Ginny's skin, he confronts his father, and he finally gets his slices of pizza. Damn good ending.

Loved that he got his pizza....He started the movie with realy no friends it seemed like..... he ends the movie with Ginnys crazy neighbor and his debate partner, in the end I thought that was so cool when he says to come visit him and remember this.

I loved the ending, I thought it was the best part of the movie.

Seems to me you're just plain scared

I liked the ending too. to me it is a happy ending.
If he had found the love of his ife, if he had overcome his stuttering and won the debate, i would like the movie less.
It´s perfect like this.

I'd rather be hated for who I am. Than loved for who I am not.

ME!!!!!!!!!! ME!!!!!!!!I did!!!!!!!!!!!! After all that stuttering (and we all have issues) I thought I, the viewer, deserved a more satisfying ending. Since this was an independent it took the realistic approach not the Hollywood approach. But had it took the Hollywood approach I bet it would have been that much more critically acclaimed and satisfying for the viewer. I couldn't stand the ending of this movie. It was a real downer. Everything before the ending was good and interesting, however. The ending, however, sucketh big time.

reply

actually,to be honest.i anticipated a hollywood-ending,yeah,but at the end,i think i was satisfied with a realistic one.
