Was this an old script from the 50's?

I've never seen an actress do so much laundry in a movie. All she does is housework. She seems to have no other life outside her concerns about her husband and her housework. Her husband buys a house WITHOUT CONSULTING HER??? And expects her to be ecstatic with whatever he chooses? He doesn't listen to her and pooh-poohs everything she says and all her concerns. When the husband dies, everybody including the children puts on heavy old-fashioned black clothing? Who does this these days? And then at the end, everything's ok because she's pregnant? Maybe some character development for this couple would have made this a better movie. I was so distracted by the 1950s attitudes that I had a hard time caring what happened to these stereotypical characters.

Some people do buy houses without telling their spouses. My mom called my dad at work one day to tell him that she'd signed paperwork for a house, and he had until 4 to add his signature. They lived in that house for 10 years.

As far as doing laundry all the time, people with young kids do a lot of laundry (spills, mud, pee, etc.) But, I think the people who made the movie didn't really put a lot of thought into the movie.

Yes. He didn't tell her because he wanted it to be a surprise for her. This isn't an unheard-of concept.

A friend of mine went out and bought a house and then came back and told her husband what she had done. He didn't want to buy a house just yet as he was building up a business. He was ropeable. Needless to say that was one of the many nails that went into that marriage coffin. Marriage ended a few years down the track. BTW he was sucessful in his business and would have bought her a beautiful house in a better suburb. Only if she wasn't so impatient.

The house was meant to be a surprise. When you have kids laundry piles up very fast. I once read the average family has about 7 loads of laundry a week about one load a day. My family has about 7 loads a week and I do at least one load a day. You have a point about the girls clothes. They do look very old fashion. Maybe it was done to add to the creepiness of the story line.

There are still a lot of people that desire and live out traditional lifestyles. It’s harder to support a family nowadays on 1 income, but the desire hasn’t changed as much as you think it has. This is why rich men are always sought after, regardless of age or looks.

Women have the Option to work now, but there are still plenty that chose not to if they don’t have to. The main character in this story is a housewife, and it works well for this story.

The surprise house thing is a cute movie moment, but I couldn’t imagine doing this in real life.
