Someone needs to distribute this flick!!!!

It almost saddens me to think of the hundreds of dollars people spend on movie tickets each year to view "big budget" films. I say this only because many of these consumers would never even consider using their money to see a movie that they haven't viewed a trailer for either on TV or as part of the "coming soon to theater near you" advertisement played prior to any movie that has the financial backing so that it can be played all over the country in the most popular theater chains. These movie lovers are truly missing out.

Some of the best movies ever made have been independent films with a very low budget, starring actors you've probably never heard of...but you will later. Last night I had the absolute privilege of being at the screening of a film called Pirates of the Great Salt Lake. Doesn't the title alone peak your curiosity?

I found out about this film via MySpace because of a friend and the fact that I love movies and seek out alternatives to what I can easily go see around the corner at my neighborhood theater. I search because indie filmmakers tend to be, in my opinion, more clever and creative with their script ideas. Why? Because they can't afford a Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt or Charlize Theron to make people take notice of their creation.

So, as I'm watching Pirates of the Great Salt Lake I was pleasantly surprised. I was surprised because I already knew, by the trailer alone, that this movie was going to make me laugh, which it did many times over, however, it also twisted at some point to make me go "well I didn't see that coming"! Don't you just love an unpredictable movie? I do. So at that point not only did it stay just down right funny but it also became a one of those "I wonder where this is going and what's going to happen next" films.

All this, the comedic factor of the film, the twists and turns and the perfect casting of the two male leads (Kirby Heyborne and Trenton James) made for a very good film that I'm already NEEDING to see again.

Why the big distributors have not jumped all over this is beyond me. The whole Pirate thing is huge right now thanks to "that damn Johnny Depp" and this movie has the potential to make money if some of those movie big wigs would take a chance on this film. I got to see the movie for free but would have gladly paid the price of a movie ticket to see it, especially now that I know it's worth it.

So kudos to the writers, directors, producers and cast for making this movie! I HIGHLY suggest you check out their website and go to a screening near you.

Just wondering: Where do you live?
Because I live in Tennessee, and I have been intrigued about this film ever since I heard of it and saw the trailer, and just wondered where you were that would get a screening.

With a bucket of blood and a yo-heave-ho.

I live in Athens, GA (try not to throw things at me, please), Lefty, and just to let you know, the most likely places to receive screenings have been out west like Utah, California, Nevade, etc. but only because the filmmakers are from there. It is very expensive (and not entirely worth it) for them to come out this way. However! If you watch the boards closely (and hound the director via MySpace like I did) you may be able to find out about the rare screenings that take place out East. I would especially look for one on or around Sept. 19th, being International Talk Like a Pirate Day, and maybe at the big comic-con in Atlanta in late August like they had last year. That may just be your best bet. Cool? Hope that helps.

Hard to hate, yet hard to like.
