Did Eddie Murphy look recognizable as Mr Wong?

I wonder if Eddie Murphy did look rather recognizable as Mr Wong since he sort of did but looked so different..

I knew something was off about his Mr. Wong's look at first but I didn't realize it was Eddie.

When the credits rolled, I was so shocked and went back through the movie to check out Mr. Wong. I couldn't believe that he wasn't a real actor, let alone that Eddie Murphy did him!

When studying Mr. Wong, I could then kind of see the real Eddie Murphy in him especially with the mouth area and voice, but those aspects were so well disguised that there's no way I could have ever guessed that he was just another character Eddie Murphy was portraying.

Still can't believe that guy wasn't a real person as I was kind of curious as to what other movies he has done.

This is the thing that doesn't get talked about enough, in my opinion.

In the "classic" movie Breakfast at Tiffany's, Mickey Rooney played the Japanese character Mr Yonioshi, and it was clearly him spoofing a caricature of Japanese stereotypes.

But, when Eddie is
- Saul in Coming to America
- Mr. Wong in Norbit
- The Nutty Professor

he plays a real character with a degree of authenticity that can indeed fool people into thinking it's some other actor, some other person.

Impressive if he is not recognizable!

The makeup for Mr Wong and Rasputia was exceptional.

I could just about see Murphy under the Mr Wong persona but I remember being completely surprised by his Jewish old man (Saul) in the barber shop scenes in Coming to America. I had no idea that that was him until the closing credits. After that, I look for him under nearly every character in his subsequent films.

reply

I could tell it was Eddie Murphy playing as the fat hog, Rasputia. But I didn't know it was him playing as Wong.

reply

It took me a minute to tell that Eddie played Mr. Wong and then towards the end of the movie I started to see some parts of Eddie. Whoever did his makeup for Mr. Wong did one helleva job.

reply

...if only there was a web site that listed the credits for movies...

reply

Honestly took me 3 or 4 watches before I knew it was him.

Strange thing was, I was convinced Mr Wong was played by a real Asian actor and all the time had this feeling of "I am sure I have seen him in something before".... but suspect it was because elements of Murphy were creeping out and reminded me of him.

reply

Hell no. I didn't know it was him until like, 15 minutes ago.

reply

Knew it was Murphy the second the character appeared on the screen
