This film deserves a higher rating

I can't believe this film only has a 3.6 rating. Granted it isn't the most original film ever but I think too many people on IMDB are rating this film on the basis that it is trying to be a cinematic classic. It's trying to be a light hearted immature humour film that you can and easily watch with your friends while having a few beers and for me it works really well at doing this. I gave it an 8.

reply

I gave it an 8

Then you're really easily amused.

I gave it a 1, and that felt like too high. This movie blew worse than a virgin with braces.

reply

blew worse than a virgin with braces? you're hilarious with an astute sense of humor. sounds like this movie would be right up your alley. this movie does deserve a higher rating, it had some really funny parts and like the original post said you can easily watch it with your friends

reply

Just three points I'd like to mention to the original poster;

1. If you like this movie you're not old enough to drink beer.
2. If you like this movie you don't have any friends.
3. If you like this movie enough to give it an 8 you should be banned from voting on this site for life.

reply

^ That is YOUR opinion, but it is ludicrous to say something like that about someone just because they like a certain movie.

But it does give a good indication of what that person is like. I wouldn't like to know anybody who rates a film like this so highly.

reply

This forum has no quality control whatsoever, so many disrespecting things are being said.

I also rated this movie really high, because I enjoyed it, and if that makes me a worthless person in your view, then so be it.

One thing I would like to make very clear to begin with: nobody should be allowed to rate a movie they haven't finished. I'm sure so many of the badly rated movies out there were rated by people who could not sit through the whole film, but point is, unless you have seen 100% of something, you can't judge it entirely.

Of course there are a few messed up things in that movie, but it's about a wounded, not so smart and passive guy who ended up with the only girl who gave him attention, but she is a bad person, and he isn't very happy, but he acceps his fait and goes on with life and hangs in there. Maybe if you're someone who is with a partner you don't really love, it actually hurts your conscience to watch this, but me, I don't have anything comparable in my life, nobody I am with for the wrong reasons.

Therefore, I was able to look past that setup and enjoy the movie for what it is. It has really sweet scenes, Norbit's love is so strong and pure for that other woman. It also has some of the funniest moments I've seen in movies, and Rasputia's lines, I found them so funny.

All I am saying is that somehow, there is something in the setup of this movie that prevents people from enjoying it thoroughly, and I've mentioned a few possibilities.

Don't judge people based on what movies they like or don't like, dude. I'm sure that can explain to me why you think that way and that you meant no harm, but I can assure you it's way too narrow-minded, you can't judge people like that, so many different ways to look at a movie. Please think about what you said, I'm sure you're smart, I'm you can be more open minded than that.

reply

Don't turn this movie into a poetry of love. That's not what it is.

reply

I was horrified when the 'baby' was thrown out of the car window in an orphanage driveby. The movie did not improve after that.

I think THIS post bears repeating.

1. I am old enough to drink beer, have been for a long time, and I like this movie.
2. I have plenty of friends, with whom I sometimes drink beer.
3. I gave it a 10. I'm still here. I'll continue to be here.

Sorry my opinion doesn't gel with yours, but to make statements like yours makes you out to be a jackass.

reply

Same here for me. I'm old enough to drink beer (though I don't) and have many friends of course. I hardly post elsewhere on this forum, but couldn't help but chime in on this thread.

It's clear most people do not like the film because of the stereotypes Eddie Murphy created in character. And people who don't care for this film ARE right, it is FILLED with them. But several of the acts ARE funny to me, those being Rasputia's dance class (trick or treat!), and church for example. Rasputias costumes are outrageously unique, and sometimes hard to remember that Murphy is playing these several characters himself, despite them being three completely different people of different race and and accents in speech. If anything, I would vote straight down the middle on this one, a 5 out of 10. I know that may piss people off, but oh well! The movie kept me interested, and several quips are funny to me. But no doubt IS difficult to watch because of the stereotypes Eddie Murphy made sure the audience wouldn't miss.

this movie relies on 2 things: nerd & obese chick. there iss nothing more to it. 50 gazillion movies that make fun out of one or the other or both. first of all this is overused and not innovative and second of all it is not funny. as the other guys already wrote, liking this does say something bad about your persona. same goes with a lot of media related releases. for example if you like TV shows that conist of home videos where people fall on their asses or otherwise make fools of themselves that also says nothing good about your persona.

there is light entertainment and there is *beep*

Shallow Hal is light entertainment, norbit is *beep*
american pie is light entertainment, American Pie Presents Beta House is *beep*

So completely untrue. And if that was an AFV reference, well--if 'bad' people like that show, then I don't wanna know 'good' people! XD
While I too can picture a 'type' of not-so-desirable (in my opinion) person who would love movies like this, I at the same time can't help feeling that you'd almost have to possess no sense of humor to not at least comprehend how it could be an enjoyable flick. It'll never be one of my favorite movies, and I'll never consider it a great film outside of the mostly stupid comedy that it's supposed to be--but I hold nothing against it because it didn't claim to be anything much more THAN that. It's not going to appeal to everyone's sense of humor, sure--nothing is...but I honestly can't think of many people who, intelligent as they may be, would probably fail to be at all amused by this film. I think that perhaps more people need to admit that, and not be afraid to say that they liked "dumb" movies. Show me almost anything, and odds are I can find at least SOMEthing to KIND of like about it--even if it doesn't come anywhere near redeeming the whole.
Besides, facts and opinions are far too often carelessly mixed up as though none of us passed that lesson in elementary school. I won't make any important judgments about anyone based upon movies they liked or disliked. Liking Norbit suggests nothing bad to me.

reply

i agree, it wasn't the best movie ever made but definitely not the worst. i'm not an eddie murphy fan and only watched this movie b/c i was trapped in a motel room but it was fun. thanie newton caught my attention big time

in reference to all the crumy movies of late, i'm give it an 8

reply

this movie wasn't that bad .. I don't know what it was but it rubbed me the right way .. and of course having thandie and her fine ass in it didn't hurt .. this is no classic but it's not 'one of the worst' by any means .. I gave it a 6 .. 3.6 is ridiculous .. plenty of horrid movies that deserve a 3.6 .. this isn't one of them

reply

Which parts were so funny that they warrant this movie having a higher rating? I thought it was humorless, woefully cliched and just plain bad. I know I'm not in the minority because the rating speaks for itself.

An 8? 8? That screams "no perspective" to me, but whatever floats your boat I guess...

reply

It doesn't deserve an 8 at all. But Balls of Fury has a 5.0/10... ugh what a pile of *beep* that was. If that has a 5, Norbit should have like a 7.

Norbit's a pretty crap film, don't get me wrong, just not AS *beep* as everyone thinks it is.

reply

well if you watch how people vote this movie. the further you go from America the funnier it is to people. Lots of fat people here are offended basically lol

reply

Hah, that's what I thought as well! I've seen better comedies than this, but I still can't understand the really low rating this movie has received. It must be because the fat people are offended or because the skinny ones find it difficult to laugh at the fat people :D Just kidding, but one might think so.

This is just one of those comedies that are fun to watch with your friends while having a few beers. The costumes and makeup of Eddie Murphy are amazing and Thandie Newton is always fun to watch. This movie should have a rating between 5.0 and 6.0

reply

If one tree crap is an 8.2 then Norbit should definitely be in the nines. After I saw that movie, I thought everyone was gonna be all over it! Oh well, I guess a have a deranged sense of humor.

1. Sentence 2 is true.
2. Sentence 1 is false.

reply

the rating is too harsh
I give it a 5... 6 at the max

reply

I actually gave it an 8, also, after watching it again, i about died laughing so hard, i watched it at work, my store rents videos out, and in slacktime, we sometimes watch movies on this laptop we have. 8/10 maybe a bit too high, but I liked it,I mean c'mon, what is wrong with people, in today's comedy movie section, it's either "Norbit", or "American Pie Presents: Jim's Dad takes a dump on Stifler's brother's face at Band Camp while running the Naked Mile, part 7". I'd pick Norbit over any American Pie sequel ( over the original American Pie, as well), oh yeah, those dumbass sex comedies from National Lampoons that aren't funny, I hate those as well. Norbit deserves atleast a 5.0 . It's way funnier than most of the crap that comes out today.

reply

I loved it. I gave it a 10.

reply

Their is no way in hell that this deserves a 7.0

And this is the perfect example of those bratty kids who screw up the ratings.

reply

bratty kids who screw up ratings? the ratings are used to find EVERYONES opinion on a movie- you can only screw them up if you vote opposite of your own personal opinion!

i gave it a six... not great, but there were some funny parts, and alot of people just dont like it because others dont like it!

reply

What I mean by kids screwing up the ratings is that they are unable to determine the difference between a good and bad movie.

Voting a 10 for this film is crazy, and no measure can be introduced on this site to control this, so they'll continue to screw up the scores.

I even consider a score of 6 a little high, but that's my opinion.

I enjoyed it too. My wife and I laughed at a few things and for a free movie on HBO, it was pretty entertaining. I think people expected old Eddie and got somethign different. I thought he played all of his parts flawlessly. His acting was fantastic. The only complaint i had was that annoying "how YOU doin" over and over again. Still, I thought it was pretty funny. it gives me high hopes for meet dave now that I know this one did so *beep*

reply

This film deserves a -7, maybe.

reply

That's what I gave it. My family and I laughed like hell! We loved it. It's not supposed to be taken seriously or offensively, it's just a gross-out comedy.

Plus the makeup, etc. is fantastic!

Different strokes for different folks, I guess?

I don't think he deserved Razzie noms for this!

reply

considering how i sorta liked Norbit for what it was..3 is kinda harsh..maybe like a 4.5 atleast lol

reply

I said NEGATIVE seven. As in, this movie blows, and deserves a number below zero. Read closely.

reply

I give Norbit a 10! I looved it! I don't know why people take things so seriously? It is just a damn comedy

No one said anything when Eddie did Nutty Professor, but they want to say something about this? Give me a break!

If it is a comedy, you have to laugh first. The movie is not clever or imaginative. The jokes were juvenile and silly. This is an hour and a half I cannot get back. "Best Defense" was funnier.

reply

I dug it. Amusing stuff with 'Rasputia' being an amazing characterization. Good work by Eddie!

reply

Lousy film enjoyed by people who have no brain cells. I'd have to seriously question the intelligence of anyone that liked anything about this movie. DUH!

reply

It´s just horrible, and the make-up is nothing new either. We have seen this kind of stuff before. There is not one scene in the movie that is funny. As you can see from the ratings, voters under 18 have like it the most, and the rest are people who are mentally under 18.
