Why was the son giving the old man cigarettes?

There is no reason anyone would smoke knowing where it leads to. My mother died from it at 59 from emphesema (sic). Since his father's condition was terminal and he had maybe two months left, he probably thought it did not matter and decided to let his father enjoy what little time he had left. Another good part by Michael Parks who has never disappointed me.
