American remake

There are numerous websites around detailing the American remake starring Kim Catrall, how are we all feeling about this?

I suspect too that the series will expand from the overall 12 episodes to a similar number for just the first season - which will be a great shame and surely reduce the quality. I recall reading that Kim Catrall loved the show, so why would she want to remake it? - very bizarre, nonetheless morbid curiosity will have me watching (at least the first episode anyway).

I don't think that it will be absolutely impossible to find a similar tone in the US remake, unlike certain series such as Spaced or Coupling. Nevertheless, why should you do it? Sensitive Skin just came to DVD here in the states, and I have it out for rent in my video shop. Just watched to full two series run this week, and I loved it. I for one will be encouraging people to watch this excellent, absorbing series instead of yet one more tired American remake.

Ooo, baby, your domestic gross is SO BIG. That's how I know how GOOD you are!

I will be interested to see how it turns out, but i'm not too worried if its been "approved" by Hugo Blick. Kim Cattrall is known to be a major anglophile (she's spent much of her life in the US & Canada but was born in the UK) so i think she'll show the original show respect.

One thing that bothers me is that the info for the American version says it's about a woman's "sexual reawakening," which wasn't the focus of the original version at all. I have a feeling the HBO will want to sex up the story quite a lot...

reply

I just hope the story isn't focus-grouped to death by the suits and bean-counters who control commercial studios these days, because that will just kill the special quality of the original that made it so magical.

reply

Sadly I feat it will be "focused-grouped to death" unfortunately past experience has shown that the original creators approval is no guarantee of quality - I could reel of a dozen or more 'gone wrong' British programmes Americanised.

reply

Yeah, this^.

It's a fascinating phenomenon. Does anyone have a grand unifying psychosocial theory of what it is in the character of US film and TV professionals that compels them to create local remakes of, um, everything?

I suppose on a clear day you can see the class struggle from here.

Hello mextex12,

There will be a Canadian remake of Sensitive Skin. The show is currently in production in Toronto, Ontario and will be broadcasted by The Movie Network, a Canadian premium cable network. Besides Kim Catrall, Don McKellar (Blindness), Elliott Gould (Ray Donovan), Nicolas Wright (White House Down), Colm Feore (The Borgias), Joanna Gleason (Last Vegas), Cle Bennett (Flashpoint), Mary Walsh (This Hour Has 22 Minutes) and Marc-Andre Grondin (Goon) are also in the cast.
