Was the episode 'Alone' supposed to be funny?

Because this was the episode that changed the entire show for me like OMG my heart breaks for Nurse Bendy every freaking time.

When the show returned for that season, it took a darker turn and I think "Alone" was probably the darkest episode.

Most definitely.

I remember the show being very lighthearted even in some of the darker subject matter but this one I just didn't know what to say or think after watching it.

Thanks I'm glad it wasn't just me that noticed.

There is a post here about some people saying they liked the show more once it went darker.

Thanks I'll have to check that out.

The change in the mood made the show far more interesting to me.

actually the episode that changed the series was the two part season two finale, Nature. it was a very dark episode. it was the episode where Orel realized his dad was a bad person and their relationship was beyond repair. through out the series most things were played for laughs and most the show was from the youthful, innocent POV of Orel. in Nature, Orel was forced to grow up (which is kinda what his dad was trying to do in the first place, though in a much different way.

the final season was not just different in its tone (lack of humor). it also mostly took place before the episode Nature, revealing the dark, more adult truth of Orels town.

personally i can relate a lot to this. i grew up in a strict christian household. i had a similiar realization that my father was abusive as well. its really heartbreaking how its portrayed in the show, but it is a very real problem. personally, i think it is genius how they did this. they started with funny, satire of fundamentalist christians, then they moved on to the darker side as well.
