Match Stick Men and The Game (Spoilers)

The movie ending is a cross between the ending of Match stick man and The Game. Did anyone else feel the same way? All in all, a good movie.

i think they took some sceans from "The criminal"..i think its more like that...
such as ..life scean, ending, and planning

the whole concept of bluffmaster is stolen from the movie The Game. I dont know what has happened to bollywood now a days, every other movie is a copy. Ek khiladi Ek haseena (blatant copy of Confidence), neal n nikki (copy of my sassy girl with scenes from meet the parents et al). I know this lack of imagination existed earlier as well in bollywood but now it is reaching epidemic proportions.

reply

Taking inspiration from Hollywood then...

reply

The game is a copy of "Nine Queens", the great Argentinian movie.

Hollywood screwed it up far more than Bollywood -- so kudos in some sense.

reply

oh yeah...
a shameless xerox of 'The Game'

the moment Abhishek Bachchan falls from the terrace, I was like 'OMG. THIS IS THE GAME'. Haha, even b4 he hit the ground i knew what teh end would b. But I enjoyed the movie nonetheless...

Nothing is original when it comes to Bollywood. They're expert counterfeiters.

I'd just like to point out Dittu states at the beginning of the plan to con Chandru that his ideas are taken from films. In Bluff Master we seeing an effort by the writers and directors to create a postmodern/post-structuralist indian film. Admittedly the film drags in parts, and its representation of the Muslim other is stereotypical, but it is to be admired for the postmodern qualities it displays in the many references to hollywood and indian films that it uses to construct the conceits between director and spectator, both in the music (use of remixes) and plot. Also the fragmentation of the personalities of all the central characters, and repeated pointing out that it is a movie with stylised wipes, introduction cards and even the shouting of cut at the very end are postmodern choices the director has made. It's the same tendency we have seen in Main Hoon Na and Bunty aur Babli. When Tarantino does it it's postmodern, but when Bollywood does it it's copying. In this age of globalisation we need to appreciate directors may be going for something a bit more intelligent, even in Bollywood. Ek Ajnabee and Zinda are out and out copies, but this is something else, primarily due to its amalagamation of several films, that it admits it will steal from anyways! Some good postmodern stuff coming from India, now it just needs some stronger/tighter scripts.

The concept was definitely a mix of Matchstick men and the game. The joined the stories well though. Dialogue was definitely spunky (esp with Nana Patekar). Song picturisation was good too.

+1! couldnt agree more with you

reply

I think most of what everyone's saying is that the premise/content of the film was taken from other movies, not so much the style in which it was done. But I agree with you that this is by far more successful in its originality of tone and style.

reply

Now now, we shouldn't generalize here. Bollywood movies have a lot of bad movies simply because India makes the most movies in the world. There quite a few diamonds in the rough!

Here's the thing The Game was released/made before Nine Queens 'The great Argentinian movie'.

reply

Game is not a copy of Nine Queens.

Nine Queens is about a con and hustle behind revenge theme where as Game is about a lesson on life.

reply

I think you mean "Criminal", because "The Game" was made in 1997, whereas "Nine Queens" was made in 2000. Also Criminal clearly and openly states it is based upon Nine Queens. You'd be hard pressed to find such a statement coming from plagiarizing Bollycrap directors.

Ironically, this isn't even ironic at all.

Ek Khiladi Ek Hasina had cons from matchstick men too.

Actually before there was even ET there was a script written by the Great Master Satyajit Ray, about an alien who gets left behind on earth and befriends children etc etc , this is a well documented fact. This script was floating around Hollywood for a few years and eventually Spielberg's ET turned up, for which he (Spielberg)took complete credit.

Look it up , dont take my word for it.

The whole thing is a rip-off of Matchstick men and Criminal(2005) mostly, and the end was mixed with The Game. This film's crap.

reply

I am sorry guys but this is not a Copy of match stick men and the game. It is inspired by the movie, but maybe only like 20%.
I myself am not a big fan of Bollywood movies and i think sanjay gupta should be lynched.
But bluffmaster was a decent movie that was well made. The Game revolves around " a game" and the whole idea of wat do u give someone who has everything in life. I think there are some secenes taken from The game but thats it. The whole teacher and student thing is not exactly from Criminal, its just a concept idea.

So please dont call this movie a copy of the game, the game is a action thriller bluffmaster is a comedy.

"I think there are some secenes taken from The game but thats it."

That's what we mean!! There shouldn't even be a single scene taken from other films, and falling from the roof and landing on a mat when it was all staged is such a copy, it's disgusting. And don't get me started on copying dialogue WORD FOR WORD straight from other films..

Ironically, this isn't even ironic at all.

Bluff Master is NOTHING like Matchstick Men. Both movies are about con-men, that's the only similarity between the two movies. And in my opinion, Bluff Master is way better than Matchstick Men as both an entertainer and as a drama about life.

I haven't seen The Game, but I have seen Criminal (2004) and it is only too obvious that Bluff Master ripped off ideas from Criminal. And yet, in my opinion Bluff Master comes off as the better movie among the two. Criminal is an average movie that I found hard to go through till the end; whereas Bluff Master is one of the finest movies to have come out of Bollywood in the recent years.

If, by copying a movie, you are creating a movie superior than the original (or creating another another master-piece, in case the original movie was one - like The Godfather and Sarkar), then go ahead! Copy all you want! :)

I don't get it: Why do people say that Criminal was "inspired by" Nine Queens, but Bluffmaster is "a rip of" Criminal?! Check Wikipedia.

I just watched this movie and it definitely reminded me of Nueve reinas (Nine Queens) regarding the whole master conmen getting conned by his junior and others who were conned by him angle and The Game which really did not make a sense since he was living life just fine with a woman he loved and did not appear to be over indulged in work to not enjoy life (like Michael Douglas's character appear to do in The Game). I did not see similarity with The Matchstick Men.

It was different even though elements appear to be taken from other movies. I think 7 rating is too high, at the most I would rate it 5.5/10.
