Question on the 'hold' that Bernie Sullivanr had...
Hello,
I'm afraid that I was only able to view half of this programme...and bits and pieces of the half I did see. @_@
I'm wondering: what "hold" did Owen Teale's character have over Suzy (Marian)?
Was it merely a physical one? I know at one point Bernie taunted Suzy about some handcuffs he was using to confine her and that she would never "figure out the secret" of the cuffs.
I know it sounds amazing, but ofttimes in real-world abusive relationships, the person being abused stays with their abuser out of *choice* ("I really love her/him," "Things will get better in the future." etc.) I'm wondering if that was also the case in this fictional account.
At any rate, I was impressed by what I saw of this. I saw Owen Teale a while back on The Thin BLue Line and was amazed at the complete 180-degree turn he gave in this performance: totally creepy.
As an aside: if any BBC America programme planners are reading this: _please_ in future when you broadcast programes of this sort, do not break it into two parts over two evenings.
I say this primarily because it ruins the continuity. It's harder to get back into the mood created by the first hour-and-a-half of the first part when the second half is broadcast 24 hours later.
I also have to wonder if the viewing numbers are lower for the second half (i.e. people forget that the conclusion is airing the following night, those who aren't familiar with the first half may not be likely to tune in for the second, etc.)
Do any IMDb members have any insights as to why broadcasters "break up" thrillers like this rather than airing it all in one block?
Granted "serializing" programmes works in the case of something like, say, Doctor Who. I'm just not convinced it works as well in the case of mystery progamming.
...but I could be wrong. Not that that's ever happened before.
