Why did Herzog sound like Kermit the Frog on the plane?

Am I the only one who noticed that? My best guess is that the sound of the plane cancelled out some frequencies in his voice and made him sound weird. At first I thought it was just a strange Korinism to have him talk like that, but even that didn't seem to make sense.
