They're the ONLY descendants?

how does it make sense that there is only 4 boys who are descendants of 4 families from 400 years ago? wouldn't there be like hundreds of descendants?

did i miss something?

Only the eldest son inherits the power.

reply

Likely that previous elder sons in the family lines overused their magic as well and aged quickly enough to die at the year of the film events. =D

reply

Agree

reply

Actually its explained in the movie that the bloodline produces only one.

reply

That's a shame. Imagine being the younger sibling of a guy with magic powers while you yourself have none. Suppose a the eldest son were to die in an accident, though, would the power go to his brother or something?

reply

It would be highly unlikely that they would die in a car accident. I mean, look at the accident Caleb got into in the movie.

As for the single child thing, I think that's why the four guys are so close. They're each other's brothers.

reply

I keep thinking, if one their fathers slept with *another* woman, that would produce another first born son of another bloodline.
They should make more.

reply

No because its HIS first born son as in the first ejaculate to manifest itself in human form lol. You realise how dumb your question is?

There are things that go bump in the night and we are the ones that bump back

reply

This is an interesting thought. Still, I think it's the man's own bloodline so technically it would be HIS first born son so if he slept with another woman, that still would be his second son and they would not have the power.

As far as I can recall from the movie, they can have other children I don't remember them saying they can only have one son. Just that only the first born gets the power for whatever reason.

The families only have 1 son. They can't have more. I'm pretty sure that's right.

reply

So no daughters, then? awfully convinient. Still, it makes a change of all the other stuff out there where only women can use magic.

reply

Well one can assume that the magic is so powerful that it can't allow hundreds of people running about....

reply

Still, all this begs the question of where the hell the other three boys father's were. Couldn't they have called their dads and sorted Chase out?

reply

its only the eldest son of the 1 with the power so thats only 1 per generation, so it doesnt matter how many other decendents there is

also calebs mum did make a comment of "let me speak to the others" but maybe with them being in their 40s anyways + probably using their powers throughout their life they wouldnt have put up a decent enough fight

chase already had double amount of power compared to them

altho caleb put up a pretty decent fight once he assended so maybe they didnt get involved for purpose of plot reasons :P

Have a Nice Day!

Was that a reference to Charmed? ;)

One thing I thought was stupid: Caleb now has twice the raw power that any of his friends will get, which probably means he's more at risk than the rest of them. What's one of the first things he does? Uses magic to do something as frivilous as repairing his windshield. Dude, you're rich as hell! You could afford to buy a new car every time you get a flat tire! What next, using magic to wipe your ass? It's a slippery slope indeed.

reply

If someone had continued on the series, we might have seen the downside to it. After all, with the power he had, he would be tempted to use it. After the big battle, there would have been residue effect.

That might have made an interesting sequel.

reply

in the movie he said that some feel the downside of the powers ie not all of them age like his father

reply

That's true too. I didn't see it that way, but it is possible that the ending was hinting that Chase may have not won overall but he did win because he made Caleb as addicted to the power now as he was.

reply

Quite right - and not only that, they're supposed to be hiding their power. And the first thing he does is to repair his windshield, in a place full of people! Stupid or what?

reply

I kind of assumed when I watched that they were trying to show that Caleb, after using so much of the addictive power the first night he had it, was sort of doomed now. Like you said, he fixes the windshield with his power, in public, after he had berated Reid for using his powers in public, and after Pogue had taken his car to the shop when it needed to be repaired. It was superfluous, risky and stupid. I thought it was supposed to show us that Caleb was now hooked, going to abuse his power, and end up like his father. Caleb's mother kept saying that his father had promised he wouldn't abuse the power, but once he got a taste he couldn't stop, I thought Caleb was the same way. Also, after he fixes it, Sarah sort of gives him a wary look, which she hides after he smiles at her and takes her hand. Although this is a sad interpretation, since he had spent the whole movie being cautious and urging the others to be careful and it seemed like he would be able to handle it, I sort of thought that the cost of him winning the fight, saving his life and the lives of his family and friends, was going to end up being that he ended up like his father. However, I also sort of expected the fight to end with Chase dying of old age from using his powers too much (or at least that both of them would look older by the time the fight was over) and that Caleb would win by not using his power and waiting until Chase ran out, though that probably would have taken years, so there is a very good chance that I was wrong about this too.

[deleted]

I thought since he had double power, he had some power to waste.

ENGAGED 19 *beep* TIMES?

reply

Nope that is now how it works the power becomes there life force. the moment they ascend they are no longer normal and abuse of there powers can result in rapid aging

reply

And you noticed how he didn't use his power to rescue the girl he likes from the fire at the end.

reply

That was the point. Notice how in the beginning of the movie, Caleb didn't even want to use magic at all because what happened to his father. Then at the end he was using it for petty things such as fixing windows. Either he was going down a bad path or more likely- he got over that particular 'weakness' and felt that now he could master his power without overusing it and becoming like his father.

The reason why he didn't want to use his powers like the others did was because of what happened to his father this is a major point throughout the movie because his mother feared he would become like his father and use too much till he came to be in the state his father was in and Caleb also feared it too because of his mother constantly bringing it up since it devastated her to the point of drinking her life away. By the end, after Caleb's fight with Chase, he finally has used his powers more than he ever has and feels he can handle it now and is no longer afraid of himself. It's character development.
