Refreshing to watch an 'Adult' horror

with no impossibly good-looking teeny-boppers running around screaming with their bosoms heaving attractively. The leading lady looked her forty years, wore sensible shoes and even the male lead sported a middle age spread which was refreshingly plausible. There are too few "adult" horror movies around, they seem to cater more for the M-TV generation, which is a pity.

You're kidding right? This was a terrible horror film in general, let alone an "Adult" horror. There are quite a few other movies in the genre you could watch instead of this tripe. Try Burnt Offerings, or Poltergeist, or 1408 if you don't want to see "teeny-boppers" running around, at least you can respect those films.

I concur.

This is one of the best horror films I've seen in a long while, and one of the best of the fest (this and "Rinne", or "Reincarnation"). I've seen almost all of them; I'm going to skip "Penny Dreadful" and "Dark Ride".

I wish more horror movies were like this (if mine get made, they'll be like this).

The Internet gave everyone a voice-everyone has chosen to use that voice to bitch about movies.

I too found the mature and troubled adult lead characters to be a welcome and refreshing change of pace from the usual sexy and attractive twentysomethingish types who often populate modern horror fare. Anastasia Hille and Karel Roden both gave terrific performances in the lead roles.

I write bios, therefore I am.

I agree. The acting was on par and I loved every minute of this film.
It's so refreshing to not have some big breasted Sarah Michelle Gellar bimbo-bitch in the lead role.

Having only seen one Nacho Cedra film previously (Aftermath) I had no idea what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised (and creeped out) to see such a great horror film.
I found this film to have a brilliant atmosphere to it, too. It had a kind of Silent Hill atmosphere to it.
If ever they should make a Silent Hill 2, I think Nacho Cedra would be perfect to direct it.

They are making a Silent Hill 2, you know?

i agree with this while i do like the cheezy horror movies with big breasted ditzy blonde bimbo sluts bein killed i also like a change and actually if those types of girls could act and make it feel real then i wouldnt mind them so much

i agree the movie was well acted with good leads and i do appreciate the adult oriented style of it very much, but the movie itself is just terrible. totally unbelievable and full of holes. its all flash, locale and visuals with no cohesion. a terribly sloppy story with some really nice effects and camera work. i have never felt so upset and irritated after watching a movie as i did with this one. never again. if you want adult themed horror that is actually good try 1408, the exorcism of emily rose, or session 9 (all i can think of at the moment).

1408 was absolutely awful. That is not a film I would recommend as a quality horror film. The story was relatively uninteresting, and the acting by John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson was lousy across the board. Nothing particularly creepy or scary in that film.

I also have to disagree with your opinion on "The Abandoned". I found it to be a very well-acted, atmospheric horror film that was filled with enough creepy and disturbing images to classify it as a good horror film. The story was not sloppy, nor was it lacking in cohesion. While not everything was spelled out for the audience, the answers are all there if you look for them.

And despite any problems a viewer may have with story or logic, the basic point of the film was get under your skin, and I felt it did that very well, combining a sense of fear, isolation, and hopelessness into a tragic and extremely creepy supernatural horror film.

I will agree with you about "Session 9", though. That was definitely a disturbing film, with strong performances (minus the awful David Caruso) and an eerie atmosphere.

Well said, this is a solid and atmospheric film.
I have to admit though - I watched this on DVD a few months ago for the first time and I seemed to remember liking it. And shuffling through my DVDs tonight for something to watch I spotted this, I'd forgotten all about it, and despite concentrating for several minutes I couldn't remember much about it. I watched it again and did like it, but I can already feel it fading from my memory.
Compared to, say, The Orphanage or The Ring which are great films, truly creepy, and unforgetable from fist viewing, The Abandoned just seems to be lacking something to take it from "okay" to "special". For me anyway.

I didn't even think of that until I saw this thread! I totally agree. Very refreshing and I must add that Hille and Roden were great in the leads.
Nice supernatural horror movie with an amazing athmosphere to it. Hey, and one weird naked chick! Haha

Other than the expected but seriously annoying errors in cyrillic lettering, I loved this movie. I think it's not really supposed to be very cohesive or make a lot of intellectual sense--it happens too quickly and the characters aren't given much information. In fact, the audience is pretty much experiencing everything along with the 2 main characters, so this is intentional and really interesting. I believe that even their nutso dad (who should know all that's going on) is so whacked out that, beyond wanting his family back, he is really incapable of making much sense. I also enjoyed that the film used a sibling relationship rather than having the male and female leads start making out ten minutes after they met. I think this is one of those films, like the Blair Witch Project, that you either curse for nothing being shown or explained to your satisfaction, or you enjoy it for exactly that same reason, as you get to use your own imagination.

As for 1408, after the repairman scene when the room was too hot, it got boring...fast. Samuel Jackson's few scenes made that movie seem like it would be way scarier than it actually was.

Some good spooky movies: Below, Night Must Fall, The Haunting (1963), Ghost Actress, The Skeptic, and The Objective. Session 9 is awesome, as some earlier poster pointed out.

I fully agree: great atmosphere, very interesting characters and amazing performances. I have this on DVD and honestly didn't like it much the first time I watched it. However, last night I gave it another chance and enjoyed it much more.
