Self-lionization

Just wanted to say, I like his shows generally, am watching Vienna right now, and he's in the Christmas Market, and he says something like " I used to celebrate Christmas ss a kid.... You may know me as the guy who..." Is urmudgeonly and tough on things like that. I HATE when people have to talk about themselves and the way they're sure others see them, like he's so positive viewers see him as edgy. And I don't get the impression he's being ironic or self- deprecating, it's just, that's how he wants people to see him, and he doesn't miss an opportunity to talk about it, as if that could possibly make it true. Reading and seeing The Friends of Eddie Coyle is not even in the same zip code as being a gangster. Don't know if anyone finds this as annoying as me, but there, I said it. He's a food show host, for crying out loud. There, I've vented.

If being a consumer of popular culture makes you edgy, then he's edgy. But people who are really the way he wants to be seen aren't even aware of popular culture, generally speaking, and they don't worry about their image. This guy is all image, of course. Which is fine, I just wish he'd give up the ghost and acknowledge he's a wannabe.

Oh yes definitely. Like when he kept putting down the Japanese cocktail master who was making him a beautiful drink, because he wasn't getting drunk fast enough. "Yeah we get it, you're *that* kind of tough guy", I kept thinking. Or when he treated Hawaiian culture as a series of vacuous clichés that was beneath him to engage with.
He's trying too hard with his image. It makes him come through as a jerk.
