Romania the WORST show ever
This episode was a complete waste. I hope the next one is back to normal.

I agree that the episode was awful. In the Jamaica episode, did Tony spend any time at an all-inclusive resort? Of course not. He had to have KNOWN even in advance that anything connected to Dracula tourism in Romania would inherently be a waste of time (not to mention a sad indication of how desperate some people are for money). They should've steered far away. And nothing against Tony, but his
friend Zamir is just not very interesting. I still get the sense that there's a lot of interesting culture and cuisine in Romania, but we missed out on that.
i think you're wrong inkan, as a rule eastern european food is not all that interesting
don't be tardy for the party
Evidently it was the government's fault, not Zamir's. Here's what a Romanian says:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0475900/board/nest/98987093?d=99436933& ; ; ;p=1#99436933
They consequently must not have had very much usable footage -- which is why, I'm guessing, the episode seemed to revolve around Zamir instead.
. . . . . . . .
Episode was freakin' hilarious.
shareYeah that makes more sense. What is up with all the Zamir hate? I thought he was pretty entertaining and knowledgeable (in a "street smart" sort of way) of things in general. He and Tony made quite the traveling duo....
it may have been not been the MOST educating episode, but, man, it was really funny. zamir's usual drunken antics (the dancing!! - wait, did he dance here?) and that shameless halloween display at drac's castle were too funny for words! I love it when the producers openly humiliate bordain with ultra-cheesiness (he asks for it, with him being the constant cynic). I'd get a kick out of traumatizing him, too!

Here is Bourdain's blog about Romania:

I love the blog that he did about it. Romania really was bad... definitely my least favorite episode. It lacked in everything. It was a hilarious episode only because it was so terrible.
shareI liked this show. It was so lame, it was funny. Zemir is a trip.
shareI can't stand the Saudia Arabia episode, Tony is much funnier when he is drinking, and the treatment of women over there is horrible which makes it hard to watch that episode.
shareYeah, I gotta agree that the Saudi Arabia show is my least favorite. I mean, I was glad he did something that was out of the ordinary and that he was respectful of a very conservative society. But Tony's at his best when he's having fun. The girl tried to make it fun for him, but I still have a problem with a society that can arrest a woman for driving a car.
shareI really didnt like the Saudi Arabia episode because they really skirted over the issues. A Westerner would probably have a difficult time with such a conservative culture though, it seems oppressive. Im glad it gave alot of people a new look at the country though so bravo Tony!!
Right near da beach, BOOOOYYYY!
Uzbekistan, Vietnam, China. Tony's been to several places with less than perfect human rights records.
I liked the Saudi episode, just for the fact that we hardly ever see anything about inside Saudi Arabia.
That cheesy Dracula hotel with the blood cocktails was so bad. Overall, I agree, wasn't a big fan of the episode. I don't really think Zamir was the problem...I'd imagine the episode would have been even worse without his antics
shareI enjoyed it as well. Hard to make calls about other places without being ethnocentric about their cultural customs. I think it's best to just do what Tony did and try and take it all in while trying to toss your ideas of what is normal to the side for a while. Besides, I think I like Tony sober more anyway, drinking is just a crutch a lot of times to enjoying the full experience of an environment.
shareAgree: It was a hilarious episode only because it was so terrible.
And Bourdain grabbed Gotta & dragged him backwards through his displeasure at the tourist venues. There's street food everywhere or you can eat in people's homes, so there was no excuse for it.
I suspected Gotta co-owned Casa Dracula or was getting kickbacks. Only that it was all so laughable is why Bourdain's friend/sidekick/entertaining foil was asked back for later episodes where someone else was charged with booking the show's itinerary.
yes it was horrible. and such a gr8 country. tony kept saying how bad it was. so y air it u cheap bastard
shareI'm Romanian, and I don't see why everyone got so butthurt. I thought Zamir was a riot. Every country has lame tourist traps like that Dracula Dress-Up place, I think it's funny to just make fun of. I don't know why anyone has to take it so personally. The Dacia car was the best!
