How does Bourdain stay so thin?

Has their ever been any explanation for that?
He seems to be consuming large amounts of food and drink without gaining weight.

I've often wondered that. I guess it's a combination of skinny genes and being 6'4", and having a guy's metabolism instead of a gal's. Plus maybe he doesn't eat/drink much off-camera, so he stays hungry for the filmed stuff.

I did notice that his face looked very puffy in the SW episode -- as if he had kidney trouble or was gaining weight. Otherwise, though, he pretty much seems like a miracle of nature.

And no, there hasn't ever been any explanation of that.

In "Kitchen Confidential" He mentioned that his nickname in the kitchen was "Flaco" or "Cadaver". My experience with working in kitchens and in Deli's is that those people never sit down for a meal they are so busy tasting all day.

I noticed from the older episodes to more recent he has put on a few pounds and isn't as lanky, but for him it doesn't matter, because he is still thin. And I'm sure with age, it doesn't stay off as easy as it used to!

But we're not talking about his life in the kitchen -- we're talking about his life as a TV host, which is spent gorging on food and drink all day for many days in a row.

Maybe he just has a good metabolism or something.

reply

That's the thing, it's not all day, and it is only a select few days out of a month or so. That's just what you see on camera.

reply

looks like he walks everywhere. that must help.

I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates, who said, "... I drank what?"

reply

Good meth and lots of it in between filming jaunts.

"Ehhh ehhh ehhh?"

reply

Always worked for ME. Heck with Jenny Craig.

It is not just how much you eat, but also what you eat that determines what it will do to your body.

I have an acquaintance who plays video games, smokes and drinks all day. This has been going on for the better part of a year. He hasn't gained one pound. Some people just don't gain weight. Some people can exercise 4 times a week and never lose a pound. Why don't you get off of your high horse sometime?

reply

You are an idiot.

Yes, genetics and metabolism both play a part in a person's body type. Bourdain himself admits that he doesn't lead a healthy lifestyle, yet he remains thin. Queen Latifah dances, works out, and eats sensibly, and she is still a woman of substance. Go see any production of "Hairspray" and you will see a girl who is destined to be heavy no matter what she does- that is a dance-intensive role, which means she gets a good workout every night.

I can see similar examples in my own family. My oldest sister is short and heavy, even though she does a lot of walking (and running around after a very active small child) and cooks very healthy foods. My brother is tall and skinny, even though he is very much the meat-and-potatoes type and drinks a lot of soda; granted, he does bike or walk almost everywhere he goes, but he also spends several hours each day playing videogames and/or at his computer and his job keeps him seated most of the day. Judging by their habits, my sister should be slim and trim and my brother should at least have a bit of a paunch, but that ain't how it works.

For the record, I'm about average, but tending towards thin. And yes, it is because of both genetics and metabolism.

I think he's just blessed like that, but remember thin people can have a protruding gut that's the giveaway. Ant's face sometimes looks puffy and off-color but I think that's from smoking and drinking. I have maybe a few beers or a bottle of wine every month.

Don't talk like that about pigs they're usually much nicer than people

reply

Coke. He has the on-screen personality of a cokehead.

reply

He's gained some weight over the last few years since he quit smoking.

reply

Maybe he doesnt eat so much off camera and eat alot on camera.
Maybe most of his nutrition is fat and protein, maybe thats his first selection and carbs last. Insulin is the key. Carbs are for many people a bad choice.

I asked him that when I met him once and he said a lot of people ask him that question. if I remember he said he doesn't eat that much throughout the day.
