Why the Wild West?

Was this ever explained? Why not medieval times? 50s? Star Wars? ect ect?

reply

Why not the wild west... The theme park (if we can call it that) are based in America so it makes sense to go back to the early days of american history... Star Wars would be way to difficult to do. You want people flying around in spaceships? The 50s would be to boring and Medieval times are more for the Europeans;-) But weren't they building some ninja warriors? So who knows if they decide to change the setting at some point...

And by the way it is based on a book/movie which takes place in the wild west.

Samurai!

The Medieval times deserves more recognition

The original had a Medieval and a Roman world as well as West, but I think for the series to focus on just one area was a better choice. Considering the source material's name recognition, it doesn't make sense to do anything but the old west.

I'm guessing their budget was used up on the west setting. In the original movie there where 3 other them parks one of which was midevil the other being a roman empire park. The violence in the film originated in the west world and spilled over into the other parks. We don't hear anything about other parks in this show so it would be akward if they try to interduce them in the next seasons.

reply

That’s not at all true. We are clearly shown Hosts from other parks in episode 1.10.

I stand corrected. The budget apparently included costumes for these other unseen worlds. I guess its good that I didn't notice these cosumtums cause it would break suspinsion of disbelief that the writers decided to make no mention of the other sections of the park. We'd at least expect to hear casual mention of other parks by guests and workers much like they'd do in real life. Doing so at episode 10 seems like an ass pull for future seasons. Also we've only seen the operation center for West world I have no doubt that other sections of the theme parks can appear in future seasons it just feels like bad writing to introduce them so late.

Narratively, it is a “hmmm” moment, I agree.

reply

they nod to the existence of the other parks, but dont spend a bajillion dollars rendering them, because they would add little to the plot, which is at bottom, existential.

i can understand, though, that it would be cool to see the story weaved thru the alternate settings. bonanza (probably way before your time, but a huge hit in its time) had the characters wearing the same cloths every week, and constantly re-used stock footage to keep production costs in line with a budget.

reply

there are other parks at westworld facilities?

reply

they are hinted at in the costumes of the hosts, i believe (i could be mistaken).

its conceivable that other 'narratives' would have had different historical settings.

the main point being, you can imply something, which is cheap, without producing it, which is expensive.
