it IS based on the video game, a friend told me and he was pretty sure...
i hope there's a lot of action! YEAH!

This movie is NOT a video game flick and it IS based on a fifty-years-old novel "Kouga Ninpou Cho" by Yamada Futaro (1922-2001).
And YES, this novel has MANY manga flicks, and one of them is named "Basilisk", the animation version is a flick from that manga.

The thing is I think there was supposed to be a movie released the very same year then was canceled. >_<

I think they woudlnt' just call it 'shinobi' though.

yes. It is. You can even spot all the bosses from the game. And somewhere in the middle of the movie.. that's sooooo level 4 Shinobi.

Ok let me try to explain this....

Take "Lord of the Rings."
There was the novel first, then somebody made it into video games and movies. the order doesn't matter.
but they all originated from the novel.

Now take "Shinobi."
There was the novel first, then somebody made it into video games and movies. The order doesn't matter.
But they are all originated from the novel.

So when u spot some white-haired devil boss in the movie, he's from the novel, not the game.

BE CAREFUL though, because in the LOTR the video and the movie were both by the same production company.
Shinobi the movie and Shinobi the video game are from two different companies.

Acually, judging from the trailers, the powers look alot like those from the Anime Naruto. (Naruto has a bunch of video games)

So, i will say it has roots within video games AND books and other stuff like history and crap.

Um ... no. How it looks or what it's similar to has nothing to do with what is was actually based off of: the anime/manga Basilisk. Just because something has the same name, doesn't mean that they're related. If there was a movie called "Butterfly" and a video game called "Butterfly", that doesn't mean they're connected in anyway -- even if they both feature butterflies. It's ignorant to relate them beyond a simple theme.
