Isn't this movie a bit like X Men in Medieval Japan?

There are some similarities with the X Men saga in themes.
It's a good movie, sadly a bit lacking in the CGI department, but very well acted. And Yukie Nakama deserves to be an international movie star. She really has all it takes.

No...no it isn't

I agree, when I was watching this I was also saying that. A lot of the characters have the same powers.

reply

Totally. Hidden Tiger, Crouching Xmen.

*Sigh*

Its been stated multiple times already on this board but I'll point it out again so maybe will actually read it.

Shinobi (like Basilisk/Ninja Scroll/others) is loosely based on the novel The Kouga Ninja Scrolls by Futaro Yamada.

And so you can compare:
Kouga Ninja Scrolls - First published 1959
X-Men - First published 1963

So how on earth can something copy a comic that was published after it?

uhm .. felli just pwned u

Relax there, you seem like you're jumping the gun a bit. Nobody said anybody is copying anything. I understand your point though, but just settle down.

reply

Yes I thought the same thing when I watched it.

While others on this thread are obviously saying that this is based on something that came out a lot earlier than X men, well I'm just comparing it to something I have seen (sorry - didn't know this was based on an anime or manga or whatever it is).

But yeah I felt that the characters felt trapped by their powers as well as empowered by them. I liked the whole theme of it with a bit of Romeo and Juliet theme added in along with some beautiful cinematography.

And it was all a surprise considering I really had no idea what this film was about when I watched it and didn't expect it to be full of visual effects with a fantasy theme thrown in - but I loved it nevertheless.
