Alright hotshots

Obviously, I can't argue with imranderoy, because he is obviously superior when it comes to knowledge of Japanese culture, cinema, people, etc. So do me a favor everybody else: when you see this movie, post what you think of it. Did it live up to the hype? Or were you disappointed? I guess your film-dork background is important too. Here's mine:
Favorite movie: Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Favorite director: David Lynch
Favorite Japanese movie: Battle Royale
Favorite Japanese director: Takashi Miike
(obviously, I am awaiting your witty and scathing reasons why my picks make me a stupid gaijin, imranderoy. And please, it's stupid gaiKOKUjin to you!)
Nationality: Americano
Grade of Shinobi: 2 out of 10. Maybe 3 if I'm feeling nice.

I don't get what's with these one sided racists like imranderoy. He sounds like he's against racism but at the same time, making racist comments against foreigners, especially ones from America.

reply

I can get why he would .. if he's Japanese. In some areas of Japan I can imagine that foreigners are seen as a pest, and I am told the Marines and the crimes they commit are very controversial. The USA gov't has a law that only the USA can convict American Soldiers. SO in places like Okinawa, if a Marine rapes a girl, or attacks someone, causes an accident, or destroys property, the police and victims can't see that justice is done. I have no idea what Imranderoy is all about, but if any Japanese person was angry with westerners, especially Americans [EDIT - because when Japanese people think "westerner", they think "American" first], I could understand.

Many [EDIT - "Many" refers to "westerners", not "Americans"] come to Japan, waste time in teaching english, trying to pick up girls, and make no attempt to learn Japanese. They end up becoming bitter, and lecturing all of us other expats on "why japan is sh**" or "why [Home country] is better than this sh**hole country",etc, before going home again. Good riddance. I have known and seen enough people like that at bars, some of them lifers that have nothing to go home to in their own country, making eyes at girls half their age, who giggle politely even though they probably think "arrgh hentai ojisan!".

I hope it's a minority of westerners that are like that, but I can see why a Japanese person could grow to dislike westerners living in Japan, just because of the media, fear, and their own experiences.

reply

reagardless, this person has a right to state his opinions whether you all like it or not. not every person in the world is perfect and of course your guna run into those people that you just cant stand. deal with it. we got enough people here in our own country that dont like the way it is either. notice that the US is the best role model for the rest of the world. they already get this impression that we're fat, our woman are crazy whores (most of them are) and that we like to get drunk and talk about how great americans are. and like the person above me says, i can see how not only japan can view us, but how the rest of the world does.

reply

I spent a few years of my childhood being a racial minority in "my own country". I lived in a town where I was the only white kid my age, and I was chased out of school on my first day by about 30 kids .. maybe it was my class. Thing is, about 3 hours flight away (that is by a twin engine Dc3, or Fokker Freindship), is the tourist town on Cairns, where nary a whitefellow ever has to really worry about how his kind is perceived by other eyes. Just like we white guys all probably sheild our wallets (or our loved ones) from those of various pigmented skin tones, even subconciously, we never think about being on the receiving end.

reply

Please give me some stats regarding marines raping women, destroying property, and causes accidents. I have heard this so many times and each time I ask for evidence nothing comes up.

If your in a bar than who the hell cares who is eyeing who, the only reason people go to bars is to pick people up. If not you would stay home and get drunk with your buddies.

But I do agree with part of your post, people hate people for as many ignorant reasons as you can come up with.

reply

Well it isn't my thing to go and pick up chics anyway, and really, the guys are using the girls, because the guys have this "status" due to them being white, and the girls are using them, because they get "Status" too. Do what they want to do ...

BUT my post was just talking about why I could imagine a Japanese person would not particularly like westerners, or would be negative towards them. There's an idea in the media here that foreigners are behind the rise in crime even.

Favorite movie: hmm thats a tough one... probably 'Pi' or 'Fight Club'.
Favorite director: Darren Aronofsky
Favorite Japanese movie: Does korean count? If yes, My sassy girl - If no, Casshern.
Favorite Japanese director: No specific preference.
Nationality: Dutch (= The Netherlands, Europe).

You guys shouldn't take what the japanese see you as to heart. I mean, they're the culture that glorifies guys dancing around in diapers and a bunch of angsty teen twits in Harajuku dressing like gothic dolls. And don't even get me started on how God damn meek the majority of them are. Makes me sick. If it weren't for a few of their movies, anime, and Playstations, I wouldn't have anything to do with 'em. So take that racist Japs, you mean nothing.

Why the hell do you need stats? Don't you follow the news? It happens on a pretty regular basis. Do your own research.

Would you actually have the courage to say this to these meek people in person?

reply

Boy, there's a lot of misinformation floating around.

cigar-I've done plenty of research on Okinawa. Tossing around statements like "It happens on a pretty regular basis" are purely inflammatory & do nothing to help the problem. You provide absolutely no evidence to back up your assertion. There was a case in 1995 where soldiers raped a young girl. Shameful as that was, it happened over 10 years ago. Hardly "regular". I'd say the burden of proof is on you.

"The USA gov't has a law that only the USA can convict American Soldiers. SO in places like Okinawa, if a Marine rapes a girl, or attacks someone, causes an accident, or destroys property, the police and victims can't see that justice is done."

Not true. Although that was the case for many years in Okinawa, the 1995 rape forced a change in the way the US military operates. Soldiers are now handed over to local authorities once they are charged by the Japanese government.

Anti-Americanism is fashionable, so I expect it from an Australian. But I must say there is something particularly disgusting about Japanese using the rape of an Okinwawan girl to feed the Japanese nationalist impulse. We all remember how Japan has treated Okinawa in the past.

America is not above reproach, but neither is Japan.

reply

You people should all stop the racism and stuff along those lines. Your judgement matters like zero much to anyone. Just go on with your lives and leave people alone. I've heard people say that Japan is full of racist, but really isn't America full of racist too?

reply

"Divide et impera" - Divide and conquer; that's racism in a nutshell. And that's part of the equation of ruling the unwashed masses. Another part is to force people of widely different cultures to mingle in a massive consolidation which they call "globalization", in order to exploit us by means of labour. This scheme has been going on for thousands of years, back and forth; "confuse and conquer" is a more applicable term for their methods.

A strong racial stereotype will reinforce the impression of being diametrically opposite each others on a genetical level, while giving one culture the means to invade "inferior" cultures by giving them the opportunity and the commodities to emulate their superiors. Culture is all and everything when world domination is concerned - it's the ultimate propaganda machine, as a self-propagating weapon of neural imprinting to mold the minds of children everywhere, the slaves of the future.

Nothing ever cease to exist, it merely changes names.

reply

I view all Japanese as one and the same as those from Unit 731. The end.

Please show me where I was being anti-american? I was only providing examples in my original post that might give some insight as to reasons (however misguided or ignorant they may be) why westerners sometimes are viewed negatively in Japan. In the years that I have been in Japan, those are the issues that people have expressed to me, and I can understand some of them. I however wasn't being anti-american, and the fact of the matter is, when Japanese folk think "westerner", they don't think "Australian" first, they think "American".

As to Japan not being beyond reproach, you are right. Japan is not picture perfect either, but no society is, and it doesn't mean that their grievances are not legitimate. Japan does have a dark past in terms of the treatment of people in their own country, and abroad, but it certainly doesn't make it unique. Here in Japan I sometimes find it hard to not feel discriminated against, especially when there seem to be seperate rules for me, than other people. I can argue that it wouldn't happen in my home country, and that multiculturalism is the greatest thing ever to grace our society, but then I think about it this way -

IF an immigrant comes to a western country, while they can survive in their own cultural enclave, in order to really be successful they have to SPEAK ENGLISH. Western countries are multicultural, but poeple really must speak english if they want to trully penetrate out from their cultural clique. In Japan they speak Japanese, and it is only spoken in Japan. When foreigners come to Japan, usually they can't speak Japanese at all. How can multiculture trully flourish if poeple can't even communicate?

reply

Dude, if you go to a westerner country, to get a chance to mingle you have to speak the LOCAL language and certainly not english. If you go to Spain you have to speak spanish, if you go to France you have to speak french and if you go to Italy you have to speak... well I'll let you guess what. But you get the idea.
Needless to say it's not only in latin countries that it happens (although it's probably especially true there), I could have tossed Germany as well in the pack, not to mention easter european countries.
In short, nobody speaks english in Europe except in the UK (obviously). In the Netherlands many do speak what is a rather broken english (from US movies so don't expect much there) but even then you will need to speak dutch if you want to have a chance to do something (other than partying that is, but then again partying is enough for most people).

reply

Yes, sorry to necro this thread, but I know all that. The discussion was about the perception of Westerners as far as the USA, Australia, Canada, etc is concerned.
