Is she REALLY blind?

First off, LOVED the movie. Best thing since Azumi IMO, and a love story instead of a "OMG KILL TEH BAD GUYz!" story was a nice change too.

But what of the ending? That was weird. I mean, she poked her eyes out. But then she opens them again, and they look okay. Then the camera shows things that are from her perspective, like the rock and the comb.

And why is she randomly hanging around on her own on a snowy mountain near a stream if she is blind anyway? Is that supposed to tell us that she's a crazy recluse now? Or was she just...remembering?

Even so watching it makes me sad. Awesome music score too. I just watched it again and it actually brought a tear to my eye. Then I got pissed off at it lol, and went searching on yesasia and everywhere I could for some kind of alternative that doesn't have a crap ending for like, hours. Didn't find anything though...

lol, yea, ending was sorta out of place, with the eyes and all. She didnt really poke them out, probably just seriously damaged them, but to a point where they could still be healed. the movie never tells us how many years its been since the "eye poking scene" so it could've healed up by then. iono, jus my theory, i'm no optometrist..

reply

Yep, she is very blind. :-) It was clearly shown that she never looked directly at anything. Her eyes were never focused.

reply

I agree with banryu. I had the same question at first... however, I then notice that her eyes are not focused on anything. It's clear, when she heard the bird, her head moving, but her eyes are not focused. Just like the blind person I know in the real life.

reply

yea and as a blind person you know this how :)

It isn't a spoiler unless you were dumb enough to click on the thread, a thread that the subject line suggests very clearly would contain information about what happens in the movie. The subject line doesn't reveal which character is or is not blind, so only by clicking on the thread did you spoil it for yourself. That's entirely your fault, not the OP's.

For her having her eyes in the end, I have two explanations:

1) Maybe she got some artifical eyes later after she poked her eyes out.

2) Back in the courtyard, maybe actually she intended just to gave away her deadly eye-look ability, not eyes itself. After loosing that ability her eyes changed color. Don't forget that before poking, her eyes shined blue, like shifted to "attack mode."

But anyway, it really seems that she is blind...

"1) Maybe she got some artifical eyes later after she poked her eyes out."

Are you kidding, right? Artificial eyes in the 16th century?

Anyway, I think she's blind... maybe she was living the dream in which they could be together, remembering the first day they've meet. And even if she is totally blind, she's a Shinobi (super-human) so she can move around in her village without any problems.

First of all i'm going to say this to everyone who posted, ALL OF YOU ARE MORONS.

I say that in the nicest way.

I would also like to say, HOW THE HELL DO EYES HEAL?!!! She full on poked her eyes out, blood everywhere.

If any of you would care to look you would see that she has the same eyes as Gennosuke at the end of the movie, Pretty much saying she had what was left of her pulp eyes taken out and his eyes put in giving her the same power he used in the movie. (The cool slow-motion bits when Gennosuke's eyes turn red)

Before any of you start saying "How would they perform an eye transplant in that era?" They are Ninja, and in Ninja mythology its not uncommon for ninja to steall whole body parts and add them to their own.

Wow just watched this film, great by the way, and just throwing this out there... but it seemed to me as though her eyes had changed to that of the same color and type of those the bird she admired so much had, symbolizing the completion of her journey from that of a warrior (eyes of destruction) to living a life of peace (being able to fly away from all the death and destruction as she mentioned in the beginning of the film).

And considering how steeped in mysticism the film is, is it really that hard to believe her eyes happened to restore themselves in the manner they did? I mean you suspend your disbelief for 2 hours not questioning all the physically impossible acrobatic feets and super powers the characters were capable of but some eyes are too much to handle?

Hey thanks so much for not adding spoiler alert to your thread title.......

Just about every Chinese person smokes. Even babies smoke. Trees smoke. Birds smoke.

By that time in the movie, "someone" being blind really shouldn't have any effect on spoiling the movie.. Unless you went on and read everything inside the thread..

On topic, she does seem to be blind at the end, either way you turn it. To whoever that sad sod was that called everyone morons - there wasn't blood everywhere, quite far from it actually, some blood dripped from her eyes and they were never revealed fully in that scene. The last scene seems like the last artistic touch to the movie, somewhat open to interpretation. I, for one, don't think she "stole" the eyes, nor "healed" them.

But seriously, in a fantasy world where a ninja with special powers can steal eyes, cannot heal her own eyes? I hope for the sake of that posters intelligence that that was an ironic post.

I thought she was blind and had just learned to navigate around her village. Her eyes could have turned colors because the damage was healing or her powers and sight was gradually or very slowly coming back?

I do not think that she really is blind. Remember when she could not use her ability when she had tears flowing from her eyes. She poked herself in her eyes till they bled, but I am not convinced that she has completely lost sight. It just seemed like she was was showing the shogun how far she would go to spare the villages.
