Why was the artist/mute scarred girl story sad? *spoilers*

it didn't seem to fit with the rest of the sad endings. he's studying abroad...doesn't compare to dying in a fire.

reply

it's sad because the painter guy is leaving the mute girl to study abroad because he didn't expect what he expected that the mute girl would be really beautiful.

do you get me?

I got the impression that the artist didn't like the burns on her face. He seemed to really like her at first with the make-up on, but once she took off the make-up and told him to draw her real face...well.. And there was a part where the artist is actually erasing the burns he drew on her face with an eraser. I was distracted during that part so I'm not positive.

I agree with this one, but not only that, maybe he's also disappointed with how she cannot speak.

it's ragtime!

I think that story was "sad" because it could never be. Su-eun knew he imagined/hoped the girl under the mask was someone beautiful. When she saw his drawings of what he thought she might look like she decided to come to him dressed up and wearing make-up to appear as beautiful as he imagined/hoped.

When he finished Su-eun knew the picutre was not a true likeness and asked him to re-draw the picture after she revealed her scar.

Su-eun also said that the only reason she showed him her face was because he was leaving. When he tried to tell her that she was not what he expected Su-eun quieted him down because she already knew.

For me, showing him erasing her scar demonstrates his hopes that it wasn't there in the first place.

I think their story was actually a little intended to be that way to tell that there are different kinds of break-ups, with their one being more common. The guy was probably going to study abroad in the first place, but he never got to tell the girl because he didn't know her at all, and then he finally got close to her when it was almost time for him to leave. I guess it's sad because they had to break apart when they finally started to know each other a little bit.

I would like to think that was the reason...mainly because it is so absurd that the guy wouldn't be attracted to her because of that scar, when the girl is absolutely gorgeous otherwise..and such a sweetheart.

However, i do think that the 3rd poster is correct.

Scars or no scars, being able to speak, or not to speak, Su-eun was the most enchanting character in the film and even the most beautiful in a physical sense with her sparkling eyes easily out-classing her attractive sister. She also had a delighfully perky personality. She is adorable even silent and behind the mask of her costume.

I'm not sure that this story (the best of the lot) is as final as the others. There is some hope that the two might actually get together in the future. At the very least it is the most subtle or ambiguous in regards to the separation, and that is probably why this discussion is taking place on this board.

Oh Lord, you gave them eyes but they cannot see...

I wish the firefighter had dated with Su-eun. She would know his value better than her sister.

I agree I think she was beautiful, even if she had a bigger scar. I guess the filmmakers intended her to be not really beautiful? Or at least disappointing? I have no idea why they thought a little scar might do it. Only thing I can think of is that Koreans spend a lot of money on plastic surgery so maybe in Korean eyes that scar is enough to make her unattractive, which again doesn't work for me at all..

I think it's sad because both of them had feelings that would never come to anything, because of the barriers between them (him going abroad, her not being able to speak, the burn mark, and his expectations of her)

I think she removed her makeup because, after he found out she couldn't speak, she could tell it would not work out (by his reaction) or that he would go abroad and forget her. So she showed him her real self, knowing that it wasn't meant to be.

Also the part where he draws her 'real self' (without makeup), in another scene someone says something along the lines of "it's what the heart sees" [not accurate, but something along these lines]. I think he drew what his eyes saw, which included the burn mark on her face, but it's not what his heart saw (he saw more to her than just a burn).

I had in mind that the sad element came from the fact that he was her first 'love', and it was a situation where, helped by his constant mention of wanting to see her face etc, she was somewhat encouraged to explore the relationship more so than she may have in the past with other people. Su-Eun is clearly not comfortable with people unless she is of close status with them, such as her sister and sister's bf obviously, and her co-workers (you see later when they're talking to her that they too, are flawed in variuous ways, such as speech impediments or intellect etc, thus she is able to relate to them.) Then comes this particular person who is perfectly 'normal' and pursues a bond with her.

So unlike the other three couplets, there is more hope to this particular pair, the sadness I think is brought on more by the human side of how their relationship came to form. The artist leaving to study abroad only provided a mild, basic sense of sadness in that he would be gone for awhile, but my personal opinion is that in their particular case, it's more talking about the heart-wrenching side of their relationship in both the sad and heart-warming emotional sense...

The artist and the deaf/mute girl's relationship will never be consumated due to the artist's disappointment of the girl having scars in the face and her disability.

The actress who played the mute girl,Shin Min-a,is definitely beautiful and sexy.No question about it.I probably would want to see her in other film feature.

reply

A lot of people seem to think the relationship went south because he was going abroad, but the reason their relationship didn't work is really because he's uncomfortable with her disability and scar. He pictured (and drew) her as this flawless girl, and she didn't reach his expectations. He kind of tries to explain that, but she puts the costume head on him before he gets too far, because she understands and doesn't want to hear him say it.

I didn't get it at first. I was thinking, How is this sad? But then, I realized, it's sad how they can't be together due to some reasons. I got the impression that he didn't like what he saw and that might have pushed him more to leave and go abroad. What's sadder is she knows it already and accepted the fact that's just the way it is.
