What happens at the end

I didn't get it. Did someone die at the end when Sad Eyes and Namsoon were fighting?

reply

Sad Eyes died at the police raid.
The fight between him and Namsoon is sort of a dream.

reply

If he died, who was the guy in the last scene with his face blocked by the sun?

reply

HMMM.
Let's see... who could it possibly be?!

reply

He did not die. If you see at the end he is on the last scence.

reply

How could he had survived the police raid?
And why would Namsoon cry?

He did die. The last scene, now that is simply weird. Maybe it's their next live or memories, don't know.

reply

So, how come that guy saw them fighting? If the director wanted this to be a vision or a dream he wouldn't have given us an eye witness. We didn't actually see "sad eyes" die, just a big splash of blood. He's supposed to be ultra fast or something so he could have escaped. Namsoon cried because her partner told her that he died.
P.S. Anyone know the comic that this is based on? and any other movies like that? I really enjoyed their tense relationship:)
Thanks

Somehow, my opion ist very different from yours. Let's see if you think, that it is completely dumb: After Namsoon experiences, that Sad Eyes was killed (why should the other Cop lie to her or tell her, that he's dead, when he is not completely sure?!), she wanders the streets and sees his ghost (sad eyes stands on the stairs und evapourates away slowly). She says, that she wanted to tell him something really badly. Then she passes the two walls, betwenn which they used to fight. One of the walls is nothing but a big shadow, the other is illuminated. Namsoon lingers for a moment, then goes straight into the shadow. Afterwards she fights with Sad eyes again. I think, when Namsoon goes into the shadow, that she's dead too, because she urgently needs to be reunited with sadeyes. The people of the town either saw them fight before their disappearance or what they see is the ghosts of Namsoon and Sad eyes.
Whatever, I really liked the movie, even though it doesn't make sense at all times. But it's really nice just because of the look ;)

reply

Her partner lied to her because he didn't want Namsoon to be pining for Sad Eyes, who is still an accomplice to the crime. She did imagine him on the stairs but I think the fight is real. The last scene shows that the detectives are still pursuing Sad Eyes.

reply

Besides, the director already did something similar earlier. He led us to believe that her partner died in the tavern, at least I got that impression. We see Namsoon so upset and we automatically assume that someone really close must have passed away.
Also if you notice that last scene, you can see that the partner also looks at "sad eyes". Maybe they formed a secret alliance.

reply

I agree. I think Sad Eyes lived. The other detective told Namsoon that Sad Eyes died becuase he was generally looking out for her well being and he either thinks she shouldn't be in volved in criminals like that or something. She did imagine him on the stairs but when she walks though the ally of lanterns and stops by a door or something, she really does see him and she tells him that she really wants to speak with him. They duel/fight because that's really the only way they know how to tell each other that they care. Like the witness said: "Like making love in the moonlight."

reply

Sad Eyes was killed. What the witness saw was the final dance between Namsoon and the ghost of Sad Eyes.

What have I become, my sweetest friend, everyone I know goes away in the end...

simply it is a trap for us to ask exactly THESE questions.
and it works, as u see ^^

reply

First of all, I think it's clear that Sad Eyes DID die in the raid, we all saw how 30 swords were going though him, and red in the centre of the screen. When she starts seeing him in the streets, he fades away, cause it's her imagination, just like when he sees Namsoon in the raid doing the same moves he is doing. I think what Namsoon wanted to tell him is how she felt in the fight she had with him, so she fights in the same place they did, alone, remembering. If you remember, a LOT of that fight is only suggested because they are in shadows, so it's a way for us to know that too. It even starts with the same phrases he used that night, and the part where her hair gets loose happens too. So the scene is a mix-up of that fight, with the snow of the night that she is remembering.

but it doesnt make sense than, when we see him at the last part with namsoon and her partner looking at him. I belive he lived somehow, and that namsoon partner said he was died so the autorithy wouldnt chase after him.

reply

That's because their story, is one of the stories of the guy in the fair... That's why the movie starts with one of his stories and ends when he finishes the one of sad eyes and nam soon. They were real people, but they weren't neither a policewoman or a thieve. Just inspiration. That's why when you see them in the end, they look different.

It's a Korean Love story.
You know someone died for SURE.

Did her partner ever say "Sad Eyes is dead"? NO, he might have been refering to the Minister/Head anyways. You notice he already tried to stop her from going to see him once in the movie, he slapped her and threw her, and was going to punch her. It's obvious he let her think what she wanted, because he wanted to protect her from being involved with him. When they fight it's real. In the last scene Sad Eyes is walking through the market, he even has hiw own sword slung over his shoulder. They make you think people die like 3 times in the movie...it shouldn't be new. Besides, you should know in movies a person can survive anything IF it will help the story.

reply

He didn't die.. He's ultra fast and not to mention unmatched assassin.. In the last bettle in the movie, namsoon was happy to see him alive and they didn't kill eachother (more liked danced).. If you see the final scene (before or during the credit rolling time) you will see sad eye walking by and namsoon looking at him.. However the FINAL battle between sad eye and namsoon wasn't showed in this film.. If you watch Damo (another Kdrama) you will know the total story.. The director only focused on their love, not on the story in Duelist (you can say the beginning of their love).. You have to watch Damo to get the whole story (it's very sad).

reply

Damo is a completely different story, the only thing that´s same is that they are fighting against people countrfeiting money. It was a good series but there is no need to watch it to understand what´s happening in Duelist...

And he died, as "silence-19" said. That´s what the directors intentions were...

alright, i might be reaching but here's what i think actually happened. i don't think sad eyes died in the raid. i agree with the others that detective ahn only told ha ji won's character that for her own good. it's like the father lying to his daughter so that she stays away from the bad boys.

also, did anyone notice that when the chief came for the secret meeting with the detectives, sad eyes was the guard holding the lantern on the bridge? so could it be possible that sad eyes is actually like an undercover government agent planted in minister hong's place to keep an eye on the real big baddie? which is probably why he apologized when he killed that government official at the tavern. (assassins don't usually feel guilt over killing someone) and also why he gave the account book to ha ji won (in addition to the fact that he loved her and wanted to help her).

therefore, if my theory is correct, then he did in fact survive and the last scene at the end suggests that ha jiwon and ahn are keeping tabs on him to make sure he doesn't do any more bad things since his assignment is over.

i really liked this movie despite its faults. it was entertaining and kept me on my toes. it definitely wasn't what i was expecting. i thought it was gonna be like hero but it felt more like kung fu hustle.

The newer DVD package has a behind-the-scenes feature in which the writer/director Lee Myung-se explicitly answers that question.

are you gonna spell it out for us or do we gotta rent/buy it? lol
