What happened in the church (spoiler!)

Hi,

I'm a bit confused by one of the "many endings"...

In the scene where the cop points the gun at the mother in the church, there is a cut to the outside of it, then you hear a bang... And afterwards, she goes on killing. WTF? Did she shoot the roof? Did she miss a sitting target at 10 meters?

Please enlighten me!

She couldn't bring herself to shoot her friend so it's likely she just pulled the trigger after the fact (after her friend left the church) and shot at nothing.
