I was a swimmer in high school, many years ago. Mostly swam the breastroke, but also went in the IM. Didn't really like the IM, because I was a lousy backstroker, but we only had one really good swimmer in that, so I had to fill in fairly often. In the summer I also raced in butterfly events and freestyle relays in club meets.
To clarify what some people have been commenting on regarding the flip turn in the backstroke; we could flip back then, but it had to be back to back. We weren't allowed to turn over on our stomach the last stroke and do a straight heels over head turn as they do now. We had to do a twisting flip, same as the freestyle flip, only inverted of course. Just one of the many rule changes that have taken place over the years. When I was swimming, freestylers still had to touch the wall with their hands before flipping in AAU meets, although that restriction had already been dropped in high school and college competition. Also, we breastrokers weren't allowed to put our heads all the way under water while stroking, as I see all the guys do now. Every sport evolves.
