Who Here is a Swimmer?

Who here is a swimmer? I am. I really like the 100 Meter IM.

I love waking up in the morning and not knowing what will happen- Titanic

I love Jesus and God!

You know you're a swimmer when IM doesn't mean instant messaging. - T-Shirt

reply

I am.

I did breaststroke for finals,
although I'm not really sure why.

But I usually do freestyle, relays, and butterly, and IMs.

reply

Yup, i swam when I was little and when i was in high school and still trying to in college, just for excercise though. I'm not going to say I'm the best or the fastest but I was just like the guys in this movie, I would go out there and give my best.

I mainly swam distance: 500 yard freestyle and I loved the 200 yard Freestyle.
I'm pretty decent at all the other strokes though.

I'm a swimmer and a swimming coach. As a swimmer I'm not very good but I love it, usually swim the 200 and 100 fly. Love coaching though, on my first job I managed to take a 14 year old kid, taught him how to swim from scratch and got him to the regionals in a year and a half.. talk about beginners luck! haha
I'd obviously love to see more swimming movies, I mean come on.. there's a movie about dodgeball (really funny also), and 1537 movies about football and baseball. So I guess a few about swimming wouldn't hurt. Who's with me?

reply

I swim as well. I learned to swim as an adult and I love to swim in open water. I have recently incorporated the "flip turn" in my stroke. I enjoyed all the nice shots of the turn in the film.

"Get in hard, come out wet."

reply

Yeah, I noticed thought that they didn't do a flip turn on backstroke. I'm not sure about the rules then but I think they were alowed to do them, it's faster so why wouldn't they do it.

reply

Actually, a lot of rules have changed in swimming over the decades. I quit competitive swimming 15 years ago and much has changed since then even. So, it would not surprise me if there were specific rules on back turns.
In regards to the movie, I was rather impressed. Usually when you see competitive swimming portrayed in the media, it is done shamefully.

I'm a swimmer also. Throughout my childhood, swimming was really my main sport. When I got in middle school I did the swim team "privateers" was the name and now im on the high school swim team for my 2nd year. What I've learned about this sport is that you're always improving I mean I went from a very mediocre swimmer, I wasn't slow but not fastest, and drastically in the past 2 years have gotten faster even though I will never be the fastest. I love distance swimming like 500s because you don't have to sprint them, they're about endurance. I took 2nd place out of 6 at finals last year in the 50 free by 5 seconds to make first. This year my goal is to master the butterfly and compete in the 500 free. I need advice on getting the butterfly. All these years of butterfly and I still haven't mastered it.

reply

The most important thing about butterfly is the rhythm/undulation of the hips. You have the two kicks/stroke, one big as your arms recover, one smaller as your arms re-enter the water. Its also important to keep your arms as close to the surface of the water as you can. Make sure that you kick from the hips, not the knees (in that you don't bend your knees in the slightest).

To finish, I'm also a swimmer; I started when I was twelve, and I just graduated from high school. I'm thinking about club swimming in college, but we'll see...
My main events were 100 fly and 200 IM, but this last season I always swam the 400 free relay, and actually got ok at the 100 free.

reply

Yeah I'm a swimmer, I use to swim the 50 and 100M fly, 200 free, 200 IM, and all kinds of relays. That was in high school though.

reply

To answer the flip turn question, hey didn't do flip turns while they were swimming backstroke because the rules didn't allow that at the time.

Overall I thought the portrayal of swimming in this movie was pretty ridiculous. I don't think anyone is ever going to make a movie about swimming that's accurate. I realize that very few people know a lot about it and that filmmakers have to simplify it for the average audience, but it would still be nice to see a realistic swimming movie.

Yay for swimmers! I am a breaststroker. And I swi the 200 IM, too, but I don't really like it...

I am! I'm on my 6th competitive swimming year. I love the 100 and 200 breaststroke, and the 200 IM.

I am a swimmer as well. I enjoy Polo more, but swimming is alright.

I'm a 50 flyer and 100 free =D

reply

I swam in High School, wish I would have done Water Polo too. I swam the 50 Free, 100 Free, 400 Free Relay, 400 IM Relay. I miss it, definitely need to get back into swimming. Michael Phelps is inspiring me to get back into swimming. His dolphin kick is amazing!

Phelps is my idol. Hes kept me in the water and fly is his best stroke like mine =)

i swam the english channel when i was 15 with 8 friends.

I also swim in my neighbors pool, which is only 2 metres wide, so i do 2,000 laps a day.

I also love the phelps, he is an example to me. Now i know not to bother trying to be great at anything because its only good for a little while, soon we will all be dead.

i love the swimmy.

I was a swimmer in high school, many years ago. Mostly swam the breastroke, but also went in the IM. Didn't really like the IM, because I was a lousy backstroker, but we only had one really good swimmer in that, so I had to fill in fairly often. In the summer I also raced in butterfly events and freestyle relays in club meets.

To clarify what some people have been commenting on regarding the flip turn in the backstroke; we could flip back then, but it had to be back to back. We weren't allowed to turn over on our stomach the last stroke and do a straight heels over head turn as they do now. We had to do a twisting flip, same as the freestyle flip, only inverted of course. Just one of the many rule changes that have taken place over the years. When I was swimming, freestylers still had to touch the wall with their hands before flipping in AAU meets, although that restriction had already been dropped in high school and college competition. Also, we breastrokers weren't allowed to put our heads all the way under water while stroking, as I see all the guys do now. Every sport evolves.
