DVD release/Liz Smth

Is this film coming out on DVD? I absolutely loved it and would really like to see it again but can´t find any information regarding if and when it will be released on DVD.

Another quick question - when Tamino and Papageno are locked in the sort of jail thing, and Papagena appears as an old woman, is it Liz Smith who plays Papagena? I don´t see her on the cast list but I´m sure it was her!

reply

It is Liz Smith.

There is indeed precious little information about a DVD release. However, there is news today of the UK premiere on this thread: http://comments.imdb.com/title/tt0475331/board/flat/63811009

What Handkerchief ?

reply

Yes, but it's only on PAL format. No word at all on an NTSC release. So if you don't have a region-free player, you're up the creek.

Baryshnikov's "Nutcracker' got an "All regions" release; why can't this movie?

reply

I have my copy in Region 1 format...

reply

How did you get it? Is it a bootleg? And are you sure it's this version?

As far as I know, no legitimate Region 1 DVD of this film exists.

reply

I ordered it from someone in Canada from Ebay...it sure doesn't look bootleg to me, it came in a nice case and plays on my Region 1 DVD player...am quite sure it is not bootleg. Maybe it is a different one? Mine is a musical directed by Kenneth Branagh ...reading from the case..."Mozart's classic opera The Magic Flute is breathtakingly transformed into a spectacular new English language film directed by Kenneth Branagh with a newly adapted libretto by Stephen Fry"...My DVD comes with Featurette, Interviews, Behind the Scenes, Trailer...which leads me to believe it is not bootleg...

Edit: Went back to re-watch it again, it is definitely not "bootleg"...it has all the bells and whistles...great special features too...

Hi critic-2:

Did you ever find this movie??

reply

Liz Smith does play Old Papagena, and she is credited at the end of the film, but not in the posters for it.

reply

In The Netherlands, this DVD is already in the bargain bins, for 2,50 euro (about 3 USD)...
