Just a "[INSERT NAME HERE] Movie" for people that gets the references to 50's holywood

isn't this movie just a bunch of nods and homages to 50's hollywood just as all the "[INSERT NAME HERE] Movie"'s does with pop culture references? I know josh brolin had some storyline, but in the end it was stretched so thin with all the "homages" to 50's hollywood.
