Jackson **Spoiler**

I was kind of disappointed at the end when they made him a professional bank robber... It just seemed like the entire movie was semi-devoted to him growing as a person, and living up to his potential. And while the robber thing is 'cool'or whatever, it just seemed to me like they couldn't think up a proper ending for him so they just threw together the ending idea.

Any thoughts?

If you listen to the DVD commentary by Mike Mayer and Cory Turner, I think it's pretty clear that the Jackson ending wasn't just thrown together because they couldn't think of a proper ending. They talk a lot about how the movie is on one hand about the heist and on the other hand about high school and people growing up, people being at that turning point in their lives where they have to decide what they wanna do for the rest of their lives. Jackson was the one character who had the most doubts about his future and the movie wrapped up quite nicely with him finally deciding what he wanted to be, as misguided as wanting to be a professional bank robber may be.

I personally didn't think the ending was weak. It was unexpected and a surprising turn at the end. Wouldn't you wanna be robbed by a bank robber as charming as Chris Lowell? ;o)

> He was an intelligent guy, but he had no guidance. They robbed a bank, everything went ok

Except that it didn't really go okay. The kids would have to answer the question of why they were in the bank at 9:00 on their own graduation day. And why Jackson calmly served a customer. And why there really wasn't any evidence down the hole, such as footprints.

And the girl's father already suspected that something weird was going on.

And "the girl" was going to blackmail her father with his affair. But whatever. If it makes you feel good to nitpick every movie you see to death, have at it.

It's hardly just a nitpick when it is the central core of the movie that is flawed.

I agree the ending was stupid with Jackson...after all the talk about his SAT scores...ridiculous

I thought they threw away all the development with his character. As much as I liked the film, I wish Jackson would have had a less sinister ending. It sort of turned the movie into a dark comedy when the rest of the film was more realistic.

So, what would be a better ending for Jackson? Seriously, I'd like to hear some ideas. But you have to keep it cinematic and it can't make the movie any longer than it is.

I can kind of see how fans of Chris Lowell might not like the ending. And I guess anyone who was looking for a meditation on four kids on the cusp of graduating into the adult world might find it to be a bit cutesy and kind of a cheat.

Maybe it didn't bother me because I cared far more about Carl than Jackson (or anyone else), and his story wrapped up absoluetly perfectly.

Maybe I'm just not a very demanding movie-watcher, but I thought Jackson turning bandito was a cool way to end the movie.

I do think it's going to be interesting to watch people debate this...

He could have become a security guard. ;o) Or a genius computer programmer who helps banks protect themselves against robbers.

It didn't bother me that much either. It came quite unexpectedly and was a nice twist at the end. Although I can see how it's not very realistic that a high school graduate suddenly turns professional bank robber from one day to the next. Not even someone as smart and charming as Jackson.

I think I understand why he became a professional bank robber. Throughout the story he is described as the kid unsure of his future. Almost all of the adults seem to really think he hasn't much of a future or talent (I'm not saying he did, I'm saying that's what they believed). So after the heist he realized something he was truly successful at. Plus, there was no one to personally object it to his face.

Look at me, I'm the bum of the future!

This was a great ending. Give a bit of irony and comedy and left you with a smile. I wouldn't change a thing about the ending.

reply

I wouldn't change anything either. He had NO idea what he wanted to be when he grew up and apparently had horrible grades in school because he didn't try. After robbing the bank he finally found something that he was really good at and liked doing. How is that unrealistic or a bad ending? Please inform me.
