Brilliant use of non-actors

Ben Sliney and the military officials bring a verisimilitude that you just can't get from a casting director, and in different ways. Sliney is the perfect embodiment of what we might imagine in his role; by contrast, the military officers ironically don't have the "military look" we generally see in movies, something to keep in mind when watching future films.

Exactly, I couldn't believe so many of them were playing themsevles. Their acting was actually better than half of the so called actors we have in Hollywood today!

Ashmi any question

reply

Agreed, although they are probably limited to playing themselves or people very similar to themselves.

I agree. I couldn't believe it when I learned that so many weren't even actors !!
Well, I think then deserved an Oscar for their acting.

Yeah Sliney was so good one would have thought he`ll perhaps follow the magic footsteps of Dennis Farina and Lee Ermey and go on to be a full time actor.

so many movies, so little time

I agree about Ben Sliney, his part is great and even with all the decisions that he had to make on that day that he had to redo for the films.

You do know that most "actors" are referred over from family right? Most people can act; however, Hollywood has made it seem as if you are only one until an agent accepts you, you get your SAG union card, and you start being publicized on television or in a movie.

I've seen enough low budget movies and small-time theatrical productions to disagree with you there.

You would be surprised. Right now I am an extra in many low budget movies, tv movies, and movie to video. There are big stars who are even in those movies too.

I've just seen a lot of bad acting. My sense as an audience member is very different from yours: that truly strong acting is pretty rare, even in Hollywood.

You wouldn't want to be an extra. I am stuck in the Twilight Zone of seeing extras and only extras in movies now. Well, there is the rare exception of some scenes where the lead actors are the only ones there; however, if there is an extra in a scene, my eyes get glued on them and I can never follow the plot of the movie thereafter.

Probably similar to other niche roles, like if you're a set dresser you pay a lot of attention to that.

I assume you've watched the series Extras?
