RIP OFF

this film has the exact same storyline as the film sweet november starring keanu reeves and charlize theron. Even freddie prinze Jr.'s character and keanu's have the same job!

Different disease, though. May not mean much to regular moviegoers. But having CF actually portrayed as a big part of a film is a big deal for the CF community.
:)

I haven't seen this one yet, mind you. But I imagine you're right about it being similar to Sweet November. That one I have seen.

So this film is good because it features an under-represented disease? I don't see the autism community rallying around "Rain Man" as a "big deal".

reply

I didn't say it was good content-wise. I agreed that it's probably very similar to Sweet November.

As for Rain Man, I would venture to say that autism is a little more represented than CF. Certainly still not enough, but people usually have an idea what it is. Plus... that came out about 20 years ago. I imagine it was a bigger deal when it actually came out.

I'll just be happy to watch a show where the cystic doesn't die off in the end...She doesn't die does she?

I'm a CF'er myself, (remembering House, Greys Anatomy etc) and I dont know about you, but I'm get really sick of the pro-CF shows that all end in the cystic dying!

reply

I don't know for sure... But from what I've heard, she does not die at the end. I personally think they should show both sides. Cystics living at 30 year old mothers, wives, fathers, husbands, etc. But also 20 year old cystics dying. Because both happen, and often. It does seem as though, up until now, they've only shown the dying half. I just don't want them to start the living half and forget that the dying half still exists. Heh.

I have seen this movie - no she does NOT die in the end. in fact, no character in this movie dies - a nice surprise. :)

Yes, this film IS good because it features an under-represented disease that people DO NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT. I'm sure many people have heard of autism, and thus raise money for research etc. However, 30,000 people are living with cystic fibrosis in the united states, yet many people (even some doctors i have had) have never heard of the disease. It's difficult to fund research for a less well-known disease AND a less common disease (autism is more common and growing with it being the fastest-growing developmental disability). Therefore, this movie did a job of getting the word out about this disease and was ESPECIALLY good in showing the emotional aspect of living with a life threatening disease. Perhaps you (cornelus) should get over your ignorance and accept that movies can be good because they portray a disease, ESPECIALLY a less-known one, and if you would watch it and appreciate it maybe you could learn from these people suffering with it.

wOw Lauren! that blows my mind that you have been seen by doctors who have never heard of cystic fibrosis !! Sure you aren't embellishing there just a little bit? Otherwise you need to sic the A.M.A on those dr's! like immediately !!!

In a thousand years, there will be no men and women, just wankers, and that's fine by me.

reply

I myself have had many a nurse and doctor that had no idea what the hell I was talking about when I said anything in relation to CF.

I am a little late in the conversation but i just want to take us back to the main point of this thread which was a rip off...

nothing about it being good or bad content because it is written on CF, great exposure... I definitely learned more about it.

still the plot is the same as that of Sweet September even down to the acting and character attitude that Keanu's character had.

I picked that up way before the illness surfaced in, i was like..."hey this reminds me of hat Keanu film... i wonder if the Charleze character is ill"

so it other words the film s crap cause it is a rip off!!!!

if it was a remake at least you would say remade with the support of CF foundation then you do that now the film just looks like a nasty theft.

sad for the writer of the first one, i wouldn't want anyone stealing from me.
and honestly even thought they are both weak scripts, Sweet November was a little better. so even thought they stole it after, they couldn't even fix it!

sad

have a good day

At first, I thought you meant Chronic Fatigue...a very under-represented medical condition.

I don't care what disease the film's about - if it sucks, it sucks.

reply

I agree, Isdaz. The film sucks, regardless of any disease portrayed. People should quit their whining and demand better representation if they really want to get the word out. Rainman was actually a good movie, hence the attention brought to autism thereafter. This movie merely makes me say, "Blah blah blah. Who cares?"

reply

I am watching this film now and I have seen enough of it to form an opinion. Yeah, it pretty much does suck. Freddie Prinze's acting does not do it for me. The Taryn Manning chick looks weird and she was blah.

I do, however, still appreciate that CF has been addressed. Now, I'm NOT saying that the fact that the girl has CF MAKES the movie good. It most certainly does not. But I still appreciate that CF is out there.

Furthermore, we cannot just "demand better representation" without public awareness. There are only roughly 30,000 people in the US with CF. Things like movies that address it get us a little bit more of that public awareness that we need in order to get the ball rolling, so to speak. But it's very hard to get people to notice when there are so few of you. Quite frankly, no one cares.

"Quite frankly, no one cares."

Quite frankly, I care even less after watching this movie. In fact, I watched this film a few months ago, and now I don't even remember what CF stands for. So there's the "attention" this film brought to CF. Wonderful job.

reply

You have got that right Emily. Major big deal!! I can't wait to see it!

reply

Also very similar to Autumn in New York with Richard Gere & Winona Ryder.

But then again, I think that Winona dies at the end, does she not?

reply

They couldn't even think of their own title - remember the Jack & Jill series?

Anyway, I'm sick of movies about female characters dying from some disease and female characters dying from some disease. Had I known this before, I wouldn't have watched it at all.

reply

Yes! The writer (who also directs and acts in the film), Vanessa Parise, also ripped-off My Big Fat Greek Wedding when she wrote/directed/acted Kiss the Bride - another crap movie.
