Dumbest line in movie (*spoiler*)

In the scene where Jack goes to the hospital to look for Jill, he asks the nurse if she'll be coming back. The nurse responds, "I hope so. We love having her here." WTF?? Is that for real?!

reply

I thought exactly the same thing.

Okay if she didn't come back again, that either means she has died or that she's moved. But still it sounded odd :)

reply

yeah its for real and not so dumb if you know anyone with cf. as they age they need to go to the hospital a lot for what they call "tune-ups". not to mention the many lung infections and other resperatory problems they have throughout life. so they get to know the employees pretty well and develop a sort of working friendship with them.

reply

No freaking kidding. I have CF & I turned into Scooby-Doo when he said that "Ruh?"
Really bad dialog choice. maybe something like "We love having here - but I sure hope not"

maybe the actual line WAS something like that, but the actor screwed up?
I don't know but I agree - LAME!!!!!

reply

Okay, I am admittedly dumb about CF. The extent of my knowledge comes from the book Alex: Life of a Child, which I read in 5th grade. I don't even know what a tune-up entails.

But why was that line so dumb?

If she needs regular tune-ups and has to go to the hospital regularly, and the only reasons she wouldn't come back were because she had died or moved, why wouldn't they hope she'd come back? I sure hope they wouldn't wish she died. And if she was getting good care there, why would they hope she moves?

CF differs in severity case by case. this Jill character had a very mild case. (which as a CF person kinda ticked me off, but that's not important right now :)) people with mild cases have hospital stays rarely - which is a GOOD thing, that's means they are HEALTHY.
So that dude saying 'hope she come back' or whatever was stupid cuz he shouldn't want her to be in the hospital cuz that means she isn't doing well.
clearer now, I hope :)

reply

Be careful throwing around the word "mild"; it confuses people. Her CF may have been mild, some people with CF may be mild, but it's a PROGRESSIVE disease. Most people start out mild, move to moderate, move again to severe, and then die (or go the tx route). Being mild now does not mean mild forever. That's just a personal pet peeve of mine.

Obama 08!!!

reply

completely agree- it was such a lame line

I have a good idea - let's get upset about a stupid line in a stupid movie. Yea! "I hope so. We love having her here." She's saying that not having her there would likely mean she's dead. So every time she shows up means she's still alive. Duh!

reply

As a CFer I can understand why the nurses have said that. Having CF means you are in and out of the hospital for weeks at a time, usually for years of your life. You become attached to your nurses and doctors, they become a second family for you. My nurses would often say "I hate seeing you in here, but I've missed you." meaning the same thing really. They care greatly for Jill, and love spending time with her, though sadly it's because she is sick.

Side note: Most cfers don't go in for one day, they go in for weeks. This movie did NOT portray CF accurately.

reply

Surely the meaning was meant to mean that her being there was good due to the fact that she was good with the other patients and cheered them up?
