Any REAL poker fans/players who watch this movie...

Must be sick out of their mind. This movie is all over the place. When she first sits down at the table after she has collaborated with all the other student, she presents herself as a huge fish, folding and showing such hands as QQ, and JJ right out of the gate. After a few seconds of mush, and pointless hands she finds herself with AA, up against 10-10, Q-Q (i think) or some high pocket pair, and a person who had flopped a flush. She completely sucks out on the river, and all of a sudden is the hero!? Did I miss something? All these kids invest their time and money into some terrible TERRIBLE girl poker player who seems to have no sense at all? I have nothing against female poker players at ALL, but this movie really does deliver a slap in the face to womans poker, only pumping the stereotype up more that women are terrible at poker.

Very very minimal poker being played in this movie. The "All In" feature in No Limit hold em is very abused, just as we all (still see) seen right when the poker boom hit, from the thousands of beginners we seen jump right in the game before having a clue what to do.

They also feature Eric Seidel, and John Juanda in this film, but of course they get no time on the sceen. (Most likely they both got completely sucked out on in the tournament by our lead character)

Yeah, this movie was pretty cheesy. As you say, the scene where she first sits down at the no-limit table was ridiculous. They take the "pretending to be a fish" thing WAY too far:

"Look at all these pretty chips...what do these colors mean?"
"Post your blinds."
"I'm not blind--I can see just fine!"

Gag.

And the final hand of TWO tournaments in the movie was won when one person went all-in with a big hand against garbage and the garbage hand managed to suck out a straight on the river. Yeah, like that happens all the time.

I agree...what was the point of having Seidel and Juanda in this movie? They didn't even have speaking parts, did they? How much did each of them make for their 10 seconds of screen time?

reply

I have to agree. But at the same time, I feel this isn't really a poker movie. I feel that it's more about relationships and one's moral views. That being said, I must concur that the poker aspect is very glossed over and "Ace" got incredibly lucky, not to mention that two "people" let her win on two occasions.

If this isn't "really" a poker movie, why not sugarcoat their horrible plot with something else? This is almost a slap in the face to the game of poker in general. But I believe this really was a poker movie, with the typical sub plot i.e. "Remember the Titans", ect. I can only imagine what Seidel, and Juanda thought after actually seeing the movie. It's almost like someone came up with the idea of having a young female poker prodigy who becomes distanced from her father early on, lives an entire different life, then must resort back to poker, and becomes reacquainted with her father. It's like someone HAD that idea, gathered the actors/actresses, told them the idea, and just ran with it. But I can't really believe that, because if I did... I really do think it would be that much of a better movie. "All In" really doesn't even derseve this much discussion, so I will just stop here. All I can say, is avoid this movie at all costs. No matter WHAT you are looking for in a movie, there is much better material out there to cater to your needs.

i play poker and not gonna watch it, even rounders sucked, if you watch how they play.

Other comments not yet touched on: in the final hand, the 7D on the flop very clearly has a major nick out of it. No way that deck remains in play.

And why the heck does the woman VO announce the final hand as if it is the final hand? "This is it, ladies and gentlemen..." with the obvious inference that whatever happens next is going to decide the champion. Um, no, it'll only decide it if Ace wins. Ih her Dad wins, he doubles up... and still trails by a huge amount. She had so many more chips than her dad that I'm surprised the table didn't lean that way.

Overall. pretty lame movie, IMO.

To the first poster, she was playing dumb to psyche out the other players. She knew what she was doing the whole time, she just didn't want the others to know it.

I think the first poster "gets" that, and is just pointing out how lamely and absurdly that was portrayed, and how even the dumbest person in the world would not buy her "fish" act.

No movie will ever suck as much as this one, ever again in history.

It's called a BRAIN. ~USE IT!

I like how he said to fear "The Doctor" as nobody can read him and he is such a good player etc. Meanwhile nobody fears Juanda or Siedel who are also at the table.

Madsen throws away his straight flush so he could let the girl win and then win money on her winning. He would never get away with it. If that was a big tournament like its meant to be, then there'd be cameras on all the carrds and everyone would see exactly what he did and proabably be facing police charges

Yeah the whole thing was unrealistic and cheesy. The acting was terrible and the games of poker were cringe worthy. The whole thing reminded me of tyhose Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen movies. The old school, low budget *beep*

The irony is she was pretending to be a fish at the table when in fact she really was one...

I just love that it doesn't even follow the rules of poker... I love the 15k bet after the flop with 15k/30k blinds

reply

My favorite part is when the dealer picks the mucked cards of the players that folded and puts them on top of the deck, when clearly other players are still in the hand.. You can only the flop on the table, and someone bet, then people folded and the dealer put their muck cards on top of the deck.. Hilarious..

I also like how she commits herself in the 7,7 hand by raising 800k and he only calls even though he has 500k left after the call.
Horrible, horrible movie, both the poker and the acting.

Just saw a clip of this on youtube. I haven't seen the whole movie and won't be watching it. I play poker on most days having made a second income from the game for the past two years.

My eyes (and ears - who the eff picked the soundtrack??) are burning - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIZueHQe6IY
