License plates - spoiler

Just wondering why - if we are in France - the first cop we see is in a car with a German license plate (+ there is another scene where we can see another car with a German license plate parked in front of Jean-François' house)

Plus, does anyone know if the French license plate GR 13 13 is typical of a governmental plate in France? (there is no such thing as vanity plates in France)

reply

Dude! Are you German? I am, and the first cop we see does not drive a car with a German license plate. Can you tell me what it was exactly? What the letters were on the plate? Apart from that, you're putting too much thought into this by far. French cops driving cars registered in Germany. 13 is weird, but not that weird. Sheesh.

...and great care is lavished upon them before the tickle-harvest.

i think "mr. schlondorff" is german, and that's his car with the GR 13 13 plates, so those might be german. his "player" was also called "hans". "mr. schlondorff" tells him that he's a descendant of schopenhauer and i'm sure i heard "hans" saying "scheisse" a few times.

This is perfectly true, but has nothing to do whatsoever with license plates. GR 13 13 is not a German license plate.

Hahaha, these guys are obviously from USA.:) Have you seen a little 'F' on the left margin of a plate - that 'F' stands for France. If it were a German plate, there would have been a 'D' for Deutschland [in German], rather than Germany [in English] at that place.

I just watched this film in a French conversation class, and according to my prof, plates with "13 13" are those of government officials.

That's not true. A combination like "GR 13 13" was never possible for any kind of plate be it government, army, civilian or whatever. Just a little artistic licence there folks... though "F" prefix, colours and font are all correct for a 2005 plate. Go here to learn about french plates: http://plaque.free.fr/f_e.html

Cool movie!
