if you like this one, you should to see 'El Abrazo Partido', same director, same actors, similar father and son relationship. Very good one!!

Somewhere along the line, the actions of this government are the actions of me.- Sean Penn

Isn't kind of a bit monotonous then?
Isn't the director risking a bit too much with the same actors and similar plots?

reply

They talk a bit about that in the DVD extras...

monotonous? not at all!

Burman is so great...

Perhaps the point of this movie is lost in subtitles. I couldn't find any point to it. Maybe you have to have seen his previous movie. Maybe it's just not a good movie.

reply

Perhaps it is lost in subtitles, perhaps it tells more about Argentineans than I thought and it does it in a very local way that yo need to either be Argentinean or familiarised with it's culture.
You don't need to see his previous movie.
I think it was a great movie.

And you definitely don't need to see Burman's previous works to understand or really appreciate this one, though if you do you'd probably understand a bit more about Burman himself and his stories...
I think this man's one of the best screenwriters in Argentina's modern cinema... This film was absolutely beautiful (so was El Abrazo Partido). Burman has a talent for telling stories... simple stories, stories about simple people and their simple (though sometimes not so simple) lives... And he definitely knows about family relationships...
Derecho de Familia is also very well directed and the cast is amazing. Isn't Eloy Burman just perfect?? Everyone in this film acts so naturally that I'd buy anything they say and at the time I was watching the film I felt I could relate to the characters, not because I had lived similar experiences but because they were all so real that I could actually understand them and sympathize with them.
An honest and engaging story and a truly beautiful film. Go see it if you haven't already...

Have a nice day.

love to read more people liking it
makes me proud to be argentinian =)

I also thought it was a very engaging film; interesting characters, whom I cared about; I had not seen Burman's previous films but I had no trouble getting into this one.

I'm slowly becoming hooked on Spanish language films. This week I've seen El Aura, Volver and now Derecho de la Familia ... each great in very individual ways. Derecho de la Familia was one of the warmest, gentlest movies I've enjoyed in a long time. I will seek out the director's other films if they're available in the US. I heartily recommend this movie which I'd dub a "coming of age" flick for male 30-somethings. What a feel-good experience that will remain in my memory. (I may even watch it again, these small films are superbly acted, photographed, and scripted. "Derecho" definitely receives the highest rating on my personal scale.
