Is this as good or better then LEON?

Hope it is...

This is in a totally different genre. What is at the forefront here is Paris, and two lonely people who find each other. A fantasy love story. If that sounds like your cup of tea give it a shot. Hell, give it a shot anyway, you might just dig it.

Far from it.

Well, Léon was no big deal to start with, but this one is much worse. It's terrible, actually. One of the worst films I watched from start to finish.

It's a silly attempt at creating a mix between a Wong Kar-Wai film and something like Bruce Almighty. So lame. 3/10 for me.

The only thing good about this is the main actress's legs. She's no Milla Jovovich, though (sorry Luc). I guess she was Milla's replacement, they look a lot like each other.

to Tyler_Durden_pt , Luc Besson is the best french director, he has changed the market and made french films that are accepted by the rest of the world; let alone stuninig, exciting, moving with a deep message, entertaining, energetic and most importantly moving.

Its embarasing to know someone like you actually exsits and is able to knock the Luc Besson .

"Luc Besson is the best french director"

You're kidding, right? Ever heard of Godard? Truffaut? Robert Bresson? Jacques Rivette?? Does Kieslowski ring a bell to you? Even people like Kassovitz and Gaspar Noé have made films that are a lot more interesting than Besson's. Please.

Besson made a couple of decent (as in "average") films and the rest is "look at me trying to be american" type of mediocrity. "Changing the market" hardly makes you a great director. You could say he's a good producer and I'll give you that - he's one of the people responsible for "americanizing" french cinema. However, to say he's the best french director is an insult to truly great french filmmakers, and I'm sure Besson would agree with this himself. You really should watch more films.

"accepted by the rest of the world"

So are you saying Michael Bay is currently the best american filmmaker?

"stuninig, exciting, moving with a deep message, entertaining, energetic and most importantly moving."

What Besson film are you talking about exactly?... You've lost me.

Seriously, though, I wasn't "knocking off" Besson - I was stating the facts. And the fact is he's an average director who made average to poor films.

It's embarassing to know someone actually thinks Besson is the "best french director".

You are stating an opinion there also, not a fact.

Fair enough, but you can well say all is opinion and there is no such thing as "fact" or "truth". If there was, it would be a fact that Besson is an average to poor filmmaker, and a very good producer.

For you it would be fact. If someone wrote it down that Luc Besson was THE best French Director ever, you wouldn't be able to dispute it because it would be fact. So lets just stick with IMHO's.

Now in MY humble opinion, he has directed, produced and written some of the most entertaining films i have seen. Great films? maybe not. But entertaining? Yes.

No, No! I'm not a vampire.

reply

Yes, but then again so are Leslie Nielsen and Adam Sandler movies. What does that have to do with being a good or average director?

This is pointless with you. Your simply biased. Go watch your Naked Gun 3.

Actually, I was thinking about watching either Bergman's "Through a Glass Darkly" or Antonioni's "Blowup", since these two great directors recently passed away. Which one do you suggest?

reply

Bergman. Hands down.

reply

Yeah, Bergman is my favourite. I especially enjoy his "chamber" pieces, although his earlier films are quite good too. A genius if there was ever one in Cinema.

Although this is a great film, Leon is LEON...
The fantasy and comedy puts this one more into The Fifth Element category (another Luc film i adore).

reply

Leon and Angel-A are two very different movies. Angel-A is very beautiful, what I would call a masterpiece. Leon is one of my favorites as well, but with a different feel. Both are very touching films though.

Death is the Road to Awe

reply

-Leon (1994) = 10/10
-Angel-A (2005) = 8/10

so obviously the answer is... No, Leon is better.

p.s. people comparing Besson to other directors in here... my money is on Besson simply because of Leon which it's unlikely any of the other directors mentioned in this thread would be able to beat that film in my mind.

and the whole... 'might not be great films but are entertaining'... my answer to this is... without a film being entertaining then what else is there really left? ... because i would assume vast majority of people watch movies to be entertained first and foremost. so while whats 'entertaining' can vary from person to person i think most would basically be in agreement that a film being 'entertaining' is the #1 thing we look for in movies and in general the worst thing a film can be is boring.

and even if people wanted to look at films as being well directed/shot etc etc... that would still come back to 'entertainment' though because some people might be entertained from a film if it's well shot etc etc. i think you get the idea.
