Conspiracy theory (spoiler)

Was all of this just a plot by the NYC mayor to rid Manhattan of the residents of
prime real estate? The tenants were being evicted to make way for higher-end
buildings, and it seemed like they were all being liquidated so none of them
would make a fuss. The mayor, meanwhile, was safely in Bermuda while all this
was going on. Since at least a few members of the current NYC administration
seem to want to chase the middle- and lower-income residents out of Manhattan
these days....in this case, it wasn't bin Laden who was the "rat bastard."

I'm not crying, you fool, I'm laughing!

I actually wondered if the developer was behind the whole thing, mostly because the cameras panned in his billboard more than once.

I'm sure that's the allegory the filmmakers were going for, but, if that were the case, why would they wipe out the entire island's population? The epidemic wasn't confined to the buildings they wanted to clear. The expensive parts of town were hit, too.

I thought the same thing. I wasn't sure if they filmmakers were just trying to further show how downtrodden these people were with a rich developer trying to take away the place they lived.

If it was the intention of the developer to kill people off then it makes no sense. Who would move into an area where a transmittable disease killed, what, thousands, Hundreds of thousands, of people? They would also be worried that some rat would still be around infected waiting to cause the disease all over again.

I thought it was saying the developement had caused the rats to change/get out...
