Because life sucks and she has to take the hard road and maybe end up working in a call center back in her homeland for pennies on the dollar while some American kid who maybe didn't read that book but bought the Cliff Notes for it and likes to be paid living wages is now waxing surfboards and provides free tech support for local surfers.

Ya know, it doesn't help that I don't recall this movie at all, which leads me to believe that I was drunk when I made this comment. I'm not drunk at the moment and even I can't quite get the point I was making.

Mr. Clark told her she could be smart and cool--she was timid and didn't want to stick out any more than she did. Hid her light under a bushel, as it were.

That school might not have had programs for gifted students or the school might not have known how smart she was because she acted dumber to fit in with her peers.
