Review of an Awful Hate-filled Movie

Having just sat through this nonsense, I thought I'd comment on the film. So first I'd have to say that this "film" adds absolutely no insight into the current religious, political or sectarian debate. It's nothing more than hateful one-sided shallow minded bigotry. To tell the truth - I doubt if it's even one sided because the one side it apparently represents would be ashamed of it.

The acting is deplorable, the accents diabolical and the "action" scenes are so farcical it's actually quite sad. Damien Chapa's attempt at a Northern Ireland accent is so funny it hurts and can only be compared to Dick Van Dykes cockney accent in Mary Poppins. It seems like the writers of the film know a few place names and decided to put them in the movie because either they were too lazy to do any real research or they were plainly stupid.

As an example, at the start of the movie the Damien Chapa character and his friend take a bike ride into the Shankill area from the Falls area. It all starts well and good as the pair head along Lanark way (a road most local people get a touch nervous on in a car, never mind a bicycle). As they travel along this road which leads directly onto the shankill they are somehow whisked through a teleport system to Sandy Row which isn't connected to the Shankil Road and which is about 2 or 3 miles from Lanark way in the South of the city (Shankill is half North, half West of the city, Falls is West). Another quick example is how he gets to Southern Ireland. Instead of a 2 1/2 hour drive across the border by any number of routes and down to Bray. He goes via ferry to Scotland, then..... well.... I can only wish he'd came to his senses and returned by ferry and took the 2 1/2 hour drive. But as we see him on a train, I assume he headed south through England then west through Wales to Holyhead and got the ferry back to Dublin in a round trip which would be in excess of 16 hours or more .....I mean...WTF. Check that *beep* out on a map.. seriously.

As for the costume department. Have these people even seen the news. With all the coverage of the troubles here, and the few wars Britain has taken part in, you'd think they would at least know what the British army uniform looks like. Apparently not! It looks like the costume department has headed for the local army surplus clothing store, bought three combat jackets, and then run out of money. YES... THEY ARE THAT BAD!!!! The few police uniforms I seen looked more like the Gardai than the RUC/PSNI.

The terrible acting was evident from the very first scene, I hoped it would improve, I was wrong, It went downhill from there. Practically EVERY actor and actress in this film is awful, Damien Chapa being the worst and as for the acting talents of Joe Estevez. I can see where Charlie Sheen and Emilio get their non talent from.

This film in general belongs in the dustbin. As a piece of advice - Download it from the internet and watch it, that way you won't waste your hard-earned money. I don't say that lightly because I strongly believe that the people in the movie industry should be rewarded for their talent. But there is absolutely none of that in any way, shape or form in this film and to expect people to pay for this nonsense is atrocious. This is a very bad propaganda film that even C.I.R.A would be embarrased about. Give it a VERY WIDE BERTH.

A low budget is no excuse for this rubbish. I can think of many many low budget films that have been outstanding and probably were better off for having the low budget. There are extremely superior films out there about Northern Irelands situation, although none will ever really tell the entire truth or show the events as they truly are or were, and none will ever really be totally impartial. But none, and I mean NONE will EVER be as wide of the mark as this film.

(I have no interest in joining in any anti Irish or anti British debates. I live in an area of Belfast close to the Shankill and Falls and have seen the aftermath of a terrorist bomb and the carnage it leaves. I promise you - It is far from glorious and heroic when you have to watch a mangled child pulled from rubble. Any film maker that promotes or glorifies any form of terrorism as something that is good should, in my opinion, be charged with incitement to racial hatred and promoting terrorism and none more than the makers of this "film").

I'd just like to point out a few things for you.

He had to leave on ferry to go to scotland so he couldn't be traced, he was a witness to a killing.

That is the old RUC uniform, this film is based in the 70's or so.

He did do his accent okay for a small portion of the movie, but he mostly sounded american.

Yes, this film was low budget and some actors were quite bad, but none the less.. I thought it was rather good.

reply

"He had to leave on ferry to go to scotland so he couldn't be traced, he was a witness to a killing."

There are hundreds of routes across the border through which he could have crossed without being detected which in fact the IRA have been doing for many years. The route he took was absolutely ridiculous.

"That is the old RUC uniform, this film is based in the 70's or so."

I wasn't aware of any peace process that was taking place in the 70's or so (the entire basis of the film in which Bobby finds himself in his current situation). In fact the IRA didn't anounce their "ceasefire" until 1994 which they broke in 1996 with the Canary Wharf bomb in London. They resumed their ceasefire in July 1997 - Not exactly the 70's or so, is it? Your lack of research or knowledge of events appear to be on a similar poor par to Damian Chapa's

"He did do his accent okay for a small portion of the movie"
Very Small indeed

"I thought it was rather good."
You must be rather easily pleased.

lolcmdrx3, cant wait to see this film just to see how bad it actually is, have heard nothing but bad reviews. Love it when some dumb yank tries to do a film on the troubles. Shows how stupid and nieve they really are. Think I might make a film about the taleban and make them out to be heroes when they kill americans, see how they like it.

'He had to leave on ferry to go to scotland so he couldn't be traced, he was a witness to a killing'.

The ferry to Scotland is the first place they would look for a suspect, what a knob, must be american, is that you chapa

typical american response to go for spelling mistakes....like you never made one in your life ever right?

reply

Spelling lamer. And since when was there a "correct" spelling of TALEBAN. Its a phonetic translation of an arabic word, spelt in arabic. Oh, and while we're at it, that country you're currently losing a war in isn't called EYERACK, its called "Iraq", or perhaps more phonetically for you "ear-ark". Dim seppos.

can't wait to see this, although my expectations are low.

i think it would be easier to grab the ferry to scotland [having myself taken it from belfast to stranraer] as you aren't leaving the UK. trying to cross the border into the Republic... that's where all eyes would be.

as far as the peace-process is concerned:
there were negotiations taking place in the '70s, and at a couple of instances the IRA had called cease-fires.

you should really know your own history before you start lording it over others.

reply

I cannot agree with you more. This film fails so badly on every single level. The writing has got to be the worst that i have ever experienced in a feature film, without exception. The 'acting' from the leads in particular is so bad that it is questionable if they have ever studied their art or were they pulled in off the street. Damian Chapa has got to take the brunt of the failure of this 'film'. He is obviously so mis-guided that he cast himself as the lead, a Belfast man who looks like and sounds like an American that everyone in Ireland would ridicule. He also wrote the woeful script with the most misguided ideas of Northern Ireland ever witnessed on celluloid. Does this man feel that he is a junior Mel Gibson or what. The remaining cast of americans playing Irishmen were also ridiculous as was poor old Rachael Hunter. IO cannot warn people enough to aviod this film even for curiosity's sake. 0/10

reply

WOW

What a terrible film, this was so bad, it was filmed like prisoner cell block H or similiar to the littlest hobo.

reply

[deleted]

As far as I know, Damian is his own distributor. That's right, he thinks he can do it all....write, direct, act, produce, and distribute. I think the terrible results of this speak for themself.

[deleted]

I watched it today. I had bought it last week, and as it was only 5 euros, you can't realy go wrong. I'd say this movie went straight to the 'discount'-section in the local dvd-store.

I enjoyed watching it, although you are correct about the big mistakes in it.
The first thing i noticed being wrong was the detour from falls to Shankhill through Sandy Row, and from there on the mistakes keep piling up.

Worth watching if it was only for Rebecca Ryan though.

<edit> why can't i find Rebecaa Ryan on IMDB? The only Rebecca Ryan is a 15 year old girl.

everyone who has writtne here seems ilke its something personal like they know this guy.

Much like Mel Gibson, Chapa seems to get people love him or hate him. I have fiunally watched this "awful film" and now I know why this guy gets investors.
great film with lots of action great acting and very well put together.

I am sure that this film will do good in the states. I was really impressed with Damian Chapa's acting. I saw him in Blood in Blood out he was great then and now even better.

Chapa keep it up great film. I think you have a few jelous "friends" who wished they could do waht you do. It seems so evident from these mails.

Thats normal for people to do these things. America gossip central. By the way did you see the way most of the answer from what look like strangers are from people with BRITISH names.

How easey is that to figure out. Can you imagine a film about palestine with a man from Israel doing the critic??????

you register that account, then post like 8 comments all *VERY* pro Chapa. WTF man, people hate your movies, learn from it, change them. You'll thank yourself eventually. Why can't you take this criticism? The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and over expecting different results.

I just don't get you. You have people here telling you exactly what was wrong and you choose to ignore it. That's beyond me.

And for the love of god, how old are you? Stand up for yourself and use your real name, say "I did this movie, I thought this and that...". Maybe all these people would change their attitude towards you if you did.

"everyone who has writtne here seems ilke its something personal like they know this guy."
I only know Chapa from Blood in Blood Out, and didn't mind him in it.

"Much like Mel Gibson, Chapa seems to get people love him or hate him."
Not really an apt comparison, as for all Gibbo's weirdo anti Semitic and racist docuhiness, it must be said, the sonovabitch sure can make a kick ass film. Unlike this film, which merely smelled of ass instead of kicked it. Christ it was awful.

"I have fiunally watched this "awful film" and now I know why this guy gets investors."
... He has a loaded Desert Eagle pointed at their heads after convincing them he's really Miklo from Blood in Blood Out and they better cough up, or he'll put a hit on them from San Quentin? Cuz after seeing this film... I honestly can't think of any other way- any other way at all- that Chapa could get investors.

"great film"

"with lots of action"
Eh?

"great acting"

Yeah, Chapa's hybrid Belfast/ Vatos Locos accent was very convincing.
As was Hunter's "The Mongrel mob are bad baaahhhstaahds mate" Kiwi twang.

"and very well put together."
Eh? No it wasn't, it was all over the feckin place.

"I am sure that this film will do good in the states."
Michael Bay films do well in the states... doesn't mean they're particularly good.

"I was really impressed with Damian Chapa's acting."
Not as impressed as the Razzie organisers, I'm sure.

"I saw him in Blood in Blood out he was great"
...Okay he was admittedly kinda badass in that. Not as badass as Popeye though.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Re5Ae5pz1tM

"Chapa keep it up great film."

Jasus, Blown Away was better than this and Blown Away sucked monkey balls. And this was actually worse.

"I think you have a few jelous "friends" who wished they could do waht you do. It seems so evident from these mails."
Well I'm not one of 'em. And as an Irish person, let me just say that this film was absolutely jaw droppingly crap. On every level.

"By the way did you see the way most of the answer from what look like strangers are from people with BRITISH names."
I'm a Mick and this film was $hite. And Ken Loach has a BRITISH name and is a BRITISH person and both Hidden Agenda and The Wind That Shakes The Barley were great. Steve McQueen is British and his Hunger was decent. The Long Good Friday kicked ass. This was just terrible. And very unrealistic.

"How easey is that to figure out. Can you imagine a film about palestine with a man from Israel doing the critic??????"
Chapa- as this is obviously you- if you ever make a film about Palestine, it'll very probably be something very similar to this, only nowhere near as entertaining. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1TsZjcF5LQ

In conclusion, please, never ever ever do a film on the North again. Because this was just embarrassing.

Nothing personal btw, Blood in Blood Out is one of my favorite films and I totally agree with you taking out Montana homes. It was right for La Onda carnal!

But no more films on the North, just stick do doing whatever it is you do when you're not making awful films about the North, thanks.

"Hey, look at that! She's not crazy, she's being chased by a cheetah!"

I don't agree with this poster's sentiment, Americans are no stupider or cleverer than anyone else , making generalisations like that make you look silly. I think it is worth noting that the IRA have long been romanticised and glamourised by Hollywood. Indeed many Irish Americans would donate funds to the IRA, in their many fundraisers in the US. Even though the US State Department issued a statement, through Colin Powell in MAY of 2001 decreeing the Real IRA as an illegal terrorist organisation. America hadn't until 9/11 faced a real ongoing terrorist threat. 'Freedom fighting causes' (which America was founded upon) have been treated 'favourably' by Hollywood.

I'm sorry for what you've seen.. the Shankill area is by far one of the worst that I can think of... I wouldn't venture into that neighbourhood if I was paid. I'll tell you ~ driving from Newry to Derry my first time I decided to stop in Belfast and see an old mate.. well, if I didn't just take a wrong turn somewhere and end up on Shankill... sad, sad, sad. Dilapitated... even the murals look worn.

I haven't seen the film in question.. and now I'm sure I don't want to. Tnaks for the heads up lolcmdrx.

A Canadian in the North.

reply

Trust me fella the fact that the murals in the shankill or the falls for that matter are not repainted every week is all good.It is a reflection of the change in attidude ,during the 70s and 80s the paint and ladders came out a lot more often. The sooner they fade out completely the better.

reply

[deleted]

You live in Newry and were travelling to Derry. You have a bloody cheek to talk about the Shankill being a dump.

reply

I never said I lived in Newry, I said I was travelling from Newry to Derry (where my son's father lives) and got lost in the Shankill trying to find a friends local... It's run down and dilaptated. Speaking of which, I LOVE Derry. I wouldn't say where he lives is a dump. None of the three houses, be that Moville, Derry or Malin are dumps... quite the contrary.
I didn't say it to sound pretentious, trust me, I come from shyte so I am not one to talk... I'm just saying that it was rather foreboding and not at all welcoming but nice that you have such an easy ability to jump to conclusions.
