Rivaldo wouldn't make my top 20-30 lol, especially after his cheating in the 2002 world cup.

Pele, the most complete player of all time. Maradona was close.. but not that close...

To be fair, Maradona was a huge cheater too. In regular season games and tournaments as well.

Let's not forget the "Hand of God"

But I give Maradona his credit. He was (to me) the second greatest player of all time. He may have been better, had he not been such a cheater/whinner/diver. But he was still awesome.

You're all insane.
Greatest Goalkeeper was a toss-up between Gordon Banks and Dino Zoff. They weren't in it just to be spectacular and they also played during a time when goalkeepers had to be tough.
Greatest Defender was Franz Beckenbauer. He was untouchable.
Greatest Midfielders were Bobby Charlton and Kenny Dalglish. They provided flair before it was fashionable in either of their worlds and actually made every team they played for look much better than it actually was. They were never fortunate to be flattered by a superior team around them like Platini and almost everyone else you have mentioned in this list.
Greatest Attacking midfielder was Pele, he wasn't officially a striker and always played deeper than a standard attacker.
Greatest Strikers, pure strikers, Paolo Rossi and Gary Lineker. They were out and out poachers, the true definition of a striker. If they were in front of goal and the ball came their way, they didn't miss.

I think it's easier to say the best player in their respective positions... after all, football is a team sport and even the best´players can't play their best in a mediocre team... and choosing only one would be too difficult, so I'll post my choices for every position, both old and new ones... so here I go...

Goalkeeper: Claudio Taffarel, Fabien Barthez with a honorable mention for Rene Higuita... nothing can top that scorpion kick!

Defenders: Lothar Matthaeus and Fabio Cannavaro

Defensive midfielders: Fernando Redondo, Gennaro Gattuso

Offensive midfielders: Diego Maradona, Johan Cruyff, Zinedine Zidane, Kaká with a special mention for Luis Figo (been a fan of him since his days in Barcelona, even though I'm a huge Madrid fan, plus I have Portuguese ancestry so there).

Forwards: Pelé (in my opinion, the most complete striker ever, with over a thousand goals in his record), Ronaldo (best World Cup striker ever, the numbers say so), van Nistelrooy (second only to Raul in Champions League all-time highest scoring forward), Gerd Müller (took about 30 years to have his record taken by Ronaldo)

I know I'm missing some great talents, especially in the defensive positions, but bear with me, I'm only 24 years old and think that the players now are better than the players 20, 30, or 40 years ago. They're physically and psychologically more prepared than before, plus technological research applied to footballs, shoes, clothing the length of grass on the field, and a long et cetera, favor my theory. For example... the fabric used today is lighter than before and absorbs little sweat, if at all.

Conservative systems are rejected and teams that play offensive, fast-paced football are considered the best. But that's just my point of view...

Ronaldinho anyone? Judging by skill and talent he's the best there ever was. Unfortunately he has almost no achievements. Barca winning the Champions League had little to do with him. And he fu|/ed up real bad at the World Cup.

reply

Pele
Diego Maradona
Duncan Edwards
Bobby Charlton
Zinedine Zidane
Raul
Ronaldo(The Fat Brazilian)
Ronaldo(The Bitchy Winker)

All absolute world class players, I can't pick out who I think is the best of all time so I chose 3

1. George Best
2. Johann Cruijff
3. Paul Gascoigne

I wasn't alive to see Best and Cruijff in there heyday, but i've seen clips on Youtube and they were something else

I grew up watching Paul Gascoigne and he could turn a game on it's head in a heartbeat, what he couldn't with a ball was not worth knowing

A short list of greats I can't put them in order

GK: Zoff, Schmeichel (not the young one haha), Banks, Kahn and Yashin. (ugh someone picked barthez)

D: Thuram, Beckenbauer (the greatest sweeper of all time), Maldini (no mention yet?), Cannavaro, I know there are some I'm missing. big ones. Oh just remembered Laurent Blanc and Jaap Stam, Baresi, Matthaus. Roberto Carlos and Cafu Denis Irwin, Hierro. Javier Zanetti (never the greatest player but one of the most consistent his whole career, also one of the greatest pure sportsmen the game has left).

Holding Mid: Makalele, and no one else, But I do have to give Davids a mention here higher than honourable, but no Maka. (honourable mentions to deschamps and gattuso but only Maka is there for me).

Wingers/left/rid mid: Best, Nedved, C.Ronaldo (love him or hate him, he will go down in history, not really a Pure winger tho), Hagi (sorta a winger or at least a left-side player), Figo I guess (tho I hate him lots of people rate him quite highly so). Messi (almost forget him, not totally a winger either but whatever). Ryan Giggs (I'll take a beating to stand up for Giggs, one of the most underrated players of all time, only players to score in every single premier league season though, and still has it at 36). Alright some are missing but yeah.

Attacking Mid: so many names I know Ill miss a big one:
Zidane, Maradona, Platini, Di Stefano, Cryuff (he played attacking mid as well), Zico, Rivaldo (some of the goals he scored were legendary) Hard to put anyone else in with names like that.

FWDs: Muller, Ronaldo (the Ronaldo despite his weight and C.Ronaldo's decision to take the jersey), Eusebio, Bautista, Stoichkov, Suker, Juste Fontaine (I doubt anyone remembers him, on this board or have much knowledge of him but look him up, or look up world cup records) Van Basten, Van Nistelrooy (he was born to score goals, would have destroyed all records set by United legends had he stayed, his name is forever in records books as well), Sir Bobby Charlton ( Man Utd Legend, Legend of the Game. Period.) Pele (Almost forgot arguably the best player of all time), and another Utd Legend, King Eric (for those of you who don't know who King Eric is I would suggest you google it, and then look up his quotes and His Crystal palace incident). And many other strikers who I'll refrain from naming because people tend to remember goal scorers more than anyone.

Alright I'm done typing, don't know if anyone will Read this but I put the effort in, yes some you could debate and I'm sure I'm missing some as well.. A couple Honourable Mentions I could think of in no particular order (guess i wasn't done typing but I love the beautiful game and all discussions of it:

Gazza, Buffon, Henry, Raul, Shilton, Shearer, Lineker, Weah, Essien, Papin, Ronaldinho (let's be honest he was one of the greatest but he likes too party too much and now his career is dying), Casillas, Michael Landrup, Abedi Ayew (the ghanian 'pele'), Eto'o, Baggio, Del Piero.

Alright I'll stop now, 5 bucks to anyone who actually reads this list and comments on it?

(I just realized my list is starting to look like Pele's list of 100 haha)
