Songs of Leonard Cohen

I tuned in about 20min into this film, so I don't know about the beginning, but two songs by Candian songwriter legend Leonard Cohen are featured during its run. First, when the women are in the crib, Ledoyens character Lucy is forced to dance to "Lover Lover Lover" with the would-be rapist (before that, Isabel sighs "Please, no more of that Cohen cassette" or something along these lines). Norman (Paddy C.) then is seen, sulking outside. You can clearly hear the chorus then, as the music's turned up by Spanish meanie: "Lover Lover Lover Lover Lover Lover come back to me" - it's used very clevery, or not very subtle here, depending on your feeling.

The director seems to be a big fan of Cohen. His use of these songs is all but arbitrary and random, it's set very fittingly to the action on screen. So, even though I think the film fails to capture this convincingly, "Backwoods" could be a commentary about 21st-Century-relationships under strained conditions, really. Hence, "There is a war (between the men and the women)", at the very end. Again, not subtle or genius, but it worked for me. Nice late night movie.

And for your astonishment - Leonard's son Adam did a song with Virginie Ledoyen (Lucy).
