Atlantic City fiasco

Why does Patton lie to the Atlantic City crowd?

If you recall, a lot of the episode is dedicated to how much they hate Atlantic City and how badly the show is going to be and how bad it actually was. But then we see Patton thank the crowd. He doesn't do it sarcastically, he appears to be geniunely appreciative of them even though (as he says) they were dreading the show. And there were earlier clips of his material bombing with the bad crowd. Then later, we hear him talking about how bad the crowd was. Why bother pretending?

I think the point was that numbers-wise, they were expecting so much more. Financially it was awful and they were expecting a bad crowd, but during the actual show they had a great time with the small crowd. And I'm pretty sure they didn't enjoy Atlantic City overall, so I think it was a matter of not enjoying the whole stop, not just the show. That's how I saw it. As an AC native-- I loved that episode!

Patton seems to like being a comedian enough that he's probably actually grateful that he generally does okay for himself. Bombing once in a while isn't going to be the audience's fault.

If you'd prefer a more cynical reason, I have that too -- maybe he's thanking them for proving him right. :D
