Does he believe what he's saying?

On one hand, I feel sorry for the guy - he's clearly a bit damaged pathologically. On the other hand, he's kinda despicable.
I can't tell if he really believes in the North Korean regime, or if he's just towing the line so he doesn't get shot. In a way, I hope he is brainwashed, because to live a double life like that all these years must be hell.
