Who the hell shops at Wal-Mart anymore?!

It's such a low budget garbage store with half-assed products. That and I guess from watching here, they treat their employees like crap. There are SO many other same style stores around now like Target, that have the same low or lower prices and are a lot nicer inside and to their employees.

Most all Wal-Marts look like they're out of third world countries. They spend no money. So many funny pics and reviews of Walmarts on Yelp.

Even better there's Costco with even lower prices.

Costco also pays its worker better wages and provides health insurance. They are not so sexist either, and the service is good. They don't lock their workers inside to work off the clock for free --something that Walmart has been convicted of doing in a number of states..

I have boycotted Wal-Mart since before this documentary came out. I think the place is pure evil and un-American. But it does fit the times perfectly. It diminishes the middle class while expanding the gap between middle class and the rich at whopping speeds. Plus they feed the Chinese economy while placing incredible burdens on our already stressed and diminishing middle class while providing massive profits to a very select few. And who's fault is it? Ours. The people Wal-Mart hurt the most are the biggest customer to Wal-Mart.

I haven't been inside a Wal-Mart store since I was fired from one the day before Labor Day 2010 (the first Holiday in which I would have been eligable for holiday pay) for failing to keep the bottle redemption room clean for an hour after my scheduled shift was over.

I'm not even the least bit tempted by their Low prices, because I now know how they can afford to offer those low prices.

Shop at walmart every week. Far better prices than at the grocery store or other box stores. Orange juice, oat meal, peanut butter, bread, pasta all of it is significantly cheaper. Long live wal mart.

I will Never ever set foot inside the particular Wal-Mart I was Fired from ever again (and fortunately I won't have to, since it's the farthest one in my city from my house and now, my apartment.) Other Wal-Marts are acceptable in a crunch, as an ABSOLUTE last resort.

I sure as hell won't be buying anything there that I don't have to. (i.e. no video games, DVDs or Blu-rays, for example)

as of today, however, I have not spent a cent there since being fired, and I will maintain that as long as possible.

bankai1978, you could very well be giving those savings back in the decrease in home value due to a W-M being in your community and the extra taxes being paid for the health care you are providing the employees. Health care you're help paying for because a multi-billion dollar company won't take of their own employees themselves. And since those said employees make such a bad wage you may be paying even more for the subsidies to help low income families in your community.

It's a free country and of course anyone is free to shop at W-M. I just feel the main reason I see for those who support W-M are incredibly short sighted and destructive to all in the big picture.

I'm personally getting a little tired of the "low wage" argument. We are talking about part-time entry-level positions that require no education and no formal training. People shouldn't be trying to make a career out of being a cashier or sales clerk. These positions should be for people who only need part time jobs or for people looking to move up in the company and are only doing that job temporarily.

What would happen if Walmart starting paying 20 bucks an hour for their entry level positions? Then what? do we move on to the guys who work the counter at the movie theater? Those single mothers trying to get by tearing tickets should be entitled to more. How can they live off minimum wage? The movie theaters should pay them more so they have enough to live on. What about the guys sacking groceries at the local IGA. How are they supposed to get by on their low wage, little hours, and no benefits.

Come on people. Walmart's entry level jobs are just like any other company's entry level jobs that don't require any experience or education. I'm not saying I wouldn't like to see those people make more. Of course I would. It would be awesome to see the single mother cashier at Walmart get 15 bucks an hour. But it's just an entry level position. It shouldn't be a longterm plan for anyone (unless that is all you need). Nobody should look at it as a career.

It's not that hard to advance in the company. There are literally tens of thousands of salary positions at Walmart making over 30k at the lowest end.

When I worked for Walmart, I started off in an entry level position. But I knew what it was. I knew the sooner I could make more money, the better off I would be. I knew I would either do it until I could advance in the company or until something better came along. I was department manager within a year. My wife also worked for Walmart and was an Asset Protection Coordinator within 4 years making over 30k. We got along just fine. We both had aspirations that went beyond being a career cashier or sales clerk.

For all of the people complaining, you can't always make the rules, but if you learn how to play within the rules, you have a better shot at winning the game. Trying to turn a entry level cashier position into a viable career option is nice in theory, but actually trying to use it as just a stepping stone to something better is the more realistic solution.

It doesn't matter how well you do your job at Wal-Mart.
All that matters if your supervisors decide they like you or hate you.

If they hate you, you can count on being fired around the time your 90 day probation period is up, especially if a paid holiday is not too long afterwards.

for example, I was fired the day before Labor Day for failing to keep the bottle redemption room clean for an hour after my scheduled shift was over.

I hear the Disgruntled Wal-mart employees are finally starting to strike.

there's even talk of a walk out on Black Friday.

what a joyful way to kick off the Christmas season would that be!

I know your post is a little old, but there actually was a walk out on black friday that year! A store up the road from where I live had to close down. The employees all walked out. My mom went shopping for the first time ever on a Black Friday. I was working at the one down the street. I left the following August after being told I was temporary, so I didn't earn holiday pay at all. Even after my probation period and working July 4.

Now I work at a grocery store that does a lot better than Walmart with prices that are a lot better. Some stuff isn't as great, but a lot of stuff is cheaper and not as bad a shape as they are at Walmart. People would pay $5 for a 12 pack at walmart and at my store, there are weekly sales of 3 for $10 or $11 or 4 for $10 or $12. Not to mention, a cleaner store and actualy day stockers.

I haven't stepped foot in a Walmart in months and plan of staying that way. Saving a few bucks on product I find to be less than for many reasons. Had a pack of oreos (don't eat those anymore anyway) that tasted really off and I'll never forget the taco kit. The tortillas were crunchy. FLOUR TORTILLAS CRUNCHY. I have a theory that they save money by buying the batches of product that don't meet top standards at the factories. I'll stick to my store. Union, paid vacations, raises, benefits after a few years, pension plans, and other perks. It's not my future, just while I am attending school.

People need to wake up. Cheap isn't all it's cracked up to be, and food is a paramount supply. One can't be too careful when it comes to that.

How 'bout that Bt corn people have been hearing about (I assume it is on the cob)? A month later, I'd be right pissed at these purveyours of that rubbish!

reply

My feeling is (and I once bonded briefly with a total stranger whom I heard echoing the same sentiment), even if the store were the epitome of business ethics and had nothing but quality merchandise, I could not shop there because when last I tried I got so irritated by my fellow shoppers I beat a hasty retreat. Do not go into that school supply aisle in late august or September, it looks like war broke out. Clothing looked like children had been left to play in it. Even the hard to screw up areas like where detergent would be, so many items were out of place you didn't know if what you got had the right price under it or not.

Haven't set foot in one in years, and never looked back.

I won't even go inside anymore. No matter whether my sister is going to work there (she has in the same city before) or not.

I've had it with them. Local for me, or small at least!
