Finally!

Another "whites-bad, minorities-good" sports movie. Haven't seen one of these in a couple months.

Actually, in 1957 minorities were discriminated against in this country. Surprise, surprise, some people think they still are. But having said that, it's just a movie, and a pretty good one at that.

reply

No I know all that. They make at least one movie a year about a courageous minority athlete or team who overcame the evil white people's attempt to hold them back. It's played out. We get it. White people are evil. We're really sorry our grandparents were racist jerks.

Right, and the thing that is interesting to me about this argument is the fact that to this day minorities being negatively stereotyped (and sometimes not only negative but just ridiculous things) is commonplace in movies/tv. Minorities have been dealing with that for years. At least there are many other movies showing white people in a positive light. I could complain about it every time a movie about a white person swooping down to the jungle/ghetto/whatever to save the savages/underpriveleged youth comes out as well but that is neither here nor there.

Another thing is, many if not most whites were racist to minorities. That is a fact. Even if hate wasn't in their heart many of them still looked down on minorities or practiced some form of racism, that was just how it was in some times/places. Of course there were non racist whites (they are often shown in these movies people complain about that SOME of those people don't actually watch) but racism and discrimination, prejudice were common in those days. To be honest a lot of these movies sugarcoat the truth if you ask me, but I digress.

The idea is that not only did these kids make history by doing something no one had ever done before, they did it while being oppressed, which in my opinion is very impressive. They had so many factors going against them that some others would not have had. Besides, they make plenty of "straight" sports movies.

Rest in Peace Dwight "Heavy D" Myers, we will miss you!

ash - put the game controller down for 5 minutes and read a book of watch the history channel. This is a true story. I'm sorry if it doesn't fit your neo-nazi view of the world but these things actually happened.

reply

Neo-nazi. Haha. When a person is proud of being black they are called courageous, but if a white person defends his heritage, he is a neo-nazi? Who is prejudiced?

You aren't a neo-nazi, but you're certainly a bigot.

Do you know what a double standard is?

reply

You're not defending your heritage though. You're just trying to elicit a response from a minority group.

reply

I don't know why I would want to elicit a response. I am simply pointing out why I find it hard to enjoy movies when for the past ten years (at least) white guilt has caused filmmakers to demonize caucasians in contrast to noble, courageous minority characters.

I'm white and disagree. I just like underdog stories. Miracle is my favorite of that bunch.

reply

I can admit, I've never seen it and it might be a decent movie. I just get annoyed when it seems like sports films (which I have loved in the past) seem to be going back to the same era to drudge up "minority team overcomes oppression of racist white establishment" stories. Enough already. I want them to make a movie about how Duke won the 2010 NCAA basketball championship with 3 white starters. Now that's overcoming adversity.

dude get a *beep* life. no ones forcing you to watch the film or any other films of related subject matter.

reply

Such a tired response. "If you don't like it, then don't watch it, dude!" Don't worry, I won't but am I not allowed to comment on it, dude?

You can do whatever you want. But complaining on the same point over and over again is even more trite. You said your point, move on.

Thanks for your permission. I'm just replying to people who have commented on my original post. If you don't care to read or participate, you can move on.

Watch the movie, seriously there is no demnoizing going on. There is also a white blonde reporter that sticks with them the whole time and tells their story. Additionally with their personality and charm they win everyone over the people they meet in Texas and KY later are rooting for them. It really speaks to the heart about overcoming diversity overall and following your dreams and it is a true story that happened in 1957 and unfortuately part of that did deal with racism if you travelled through the Jim Crow south.
