Horrible casting.

Having actually coached little league baseball and soccer in Mexico I can tell you it's very obvious these kids are not even Mexican. Most of them are from Central American descent (Guatemala, El Salvador etc) and don't look even remotely Mexican.

I head alot of good things about this movie but have not even finished it as the believabilty level is so far off due to the miscasting.

Cheech Marin as a priest? That in itself is a blasphemy.

With all due respect you have no idea what you are talking about. Several kids were cast directly from Mexico. One of the kids, Carlos Padilla, is a huge child star in Mexico and the rest had to be cast elsewhere due to the unique need for a 12 year old kid that could not only act but play real baseball. We held casting calls all over Mexico for nearly a year. We ended up doing the same in the U.S.

I spent a lot of time in Mexico and have seen three very distinct and different looking citizens. The European, blonde blue eyed Mexican, the Spain decedent looking Mexican and the Native Indian Mexican. All Mexican.

And Cheech does a remarkable job as Padre Estaban. Tom Cruise played a Navy pilot...do you think he is actually a fighter pilot? Arnold Schwarzenegger played an cyborg robot...do you believe he is made of metal? its called acting for a reason.

I agree. The kids in the film look like typical Mexican kids. I also have spent a lot of time in Mexico and Central America. I have to admit, I've seen very few blonde blue-eyed Mexicans. Maybe there are some in affluent areas of big cities. The Mexican people are mestizo, with a hich percentage of Indian blood throughout the vast majority of the population.
