Sorry I am years too late answering this Q. Yes, Seriozha D. and Vaslav N. are romantic in the movie. But quite a bit of filler for the first half of the movie involves Romola d. P.'s heterosexual seduction of V. as a salvation motive. D. loving his male dancers and turning them into choreographers was a repeating major theme of his own life.
