Is Japan actually going to sink??

I know this isn't exactly the best of times to ask such a question, considering all the terrorism issues and whatever natural disasters we have out there but I really want to know, having just heard of this film last week, whether the movie is based on geographic facts... the plate tectonics and such, or any sort of research ?? Please don't slam me, its not that I want Japan to sink ... I just want some knowledge, that's all

reply

If the direction of the convection in the earth outer mantle would change as it happens in the movie and novel this could really happen but there is no evidence whatsoever that this will happen some day or even any day. And I cannot believe that such a process would really happen that fast.

reply

Yes, Japan is going to sink. In about 60,000 years when the polar ice caps melt (Earth is currently in a "small" ice age).
Other than that, don't worry. Our hentai and sushi rolls aren't about to disappear anytime soon.

reply

You totally want Japan to sink. And I applaud you for wanting it. Yet you don't have the balls to admit it, and for that I retract my applause.

reply

First of all, thanks for the knowledge provided ... it give me something to pounder and think over

Secondly, I do not care whether Japan sink or not ... I am studying the entire issue as a research of personal interest, nothing to do with cultural, people or history...

But if U really want me to dwell into history, I shall say ...
yes, they had did many countries wrong in the war many years ago but no amount of punishment will make up for their misdeeds, ... even if Japan is to crumple to the bottom of earth one day and vanish from the geographic map, that will be letting them off too lightly in my opinion... however, who are we to judge anyway ...

reply

oh boo hoo

if japan should be punished then so should america for their treatment of blacks and native americans, the dutch and english for africans, the english and russians for the arabs. the list goes on and on, it is the nature of the world so get over it.

Boo hoo, maruta, you sound like a crybaby yourself. America never started a World War, and has never treated any ethnic group in the same way as the Japanese treated the Chinese and the Koreans.

Gee, that goes for almost every country...every country has done something bad.

reply

History isn't so black and white where Japan is concearned. if you did a little research into Japan to the time period prior to WW1 you would discover many interesting facts. ie: Japan sided with the 'allies' but their allegience switched by the time of WW2 because England had basically screwed them over regarding politics over promised territory in return for Japans military help (England sought the help of the Japanese military because they were more highly trained and an advanced fighting force at the time). Also America had its eyes on Japan pre WW2 thus the reason why Japan were sided with the 'axis' countries.

So whatever wrongs were commited by whoever no one was really the 'good' guys or the 'bad' guys. It's not pre school text book history, oh Japanese are just little cruel slanty eyed yellow men and were on Hitlers side, so they suck.
Why would anyone want a whole nation to disappear completely just because of skin and cultural differences, isn't this way of thinking the reason why your grandfathers and fathers before them fought and sacrificed their lives for in war to eradicate?. Gawd some people.. *sigh*

reply

Excuse me? Please, grow up. Wishing for any country to its demise, especially via a natural disaster, is quite ludicrous. I'm half Japanese and American, and I've seen the good and bad of both countries through the years. Every country has some blood stained on its flag, no matter how many times the history books and politicians try to clean it up.

Now, back on topic...

Japan will sink, along with many countries and islands. We'll be long dead by then, including the terrorist groups (and most likely their country of residence, and many others I'm sure) that you're strangely worried about.

reply

Yes Japan will sink, but not anytime soon. However, they're in a risk of getting an earthquake that strong just like in the movie. There were researches done within the Japanese government that showed they are highly probably to an earthquake or more with magnitude that of above 7 to 8. However, the probability is quite low, so I don't think it really matters, but I know for sure the Japanese government was preparing for this (I don't know if they are still doing it).

I'll miss the school girl outfits :(...

reply

Yes, Japan will 'sink'.

But so will most of the low lying countries including the US coasts. If we don't do something soon (HINT: Like ratifying the Kyoto treaty!!) in another 15-20 years we will have to redraw every map and globe.

But this isn't the movie to find out that info - for that see "An Inconvenient Truth"....and if you think I'm just a wacky alarmist, I dare you to watch the documentary and come to your OWN conclusions, after being presented with the VERFIABLE facts.

When i first begun this thread, I hardly thought that it will spawn so much of active responses from people with many different points of views regarding the matter ... what I really want was just geographic or scentific facts, which some of you did contribute to, thanks a lot ... not that I mind the side discussion of the rights and wrongs of war & stuff...they ve been thought provoking and interesting, but one thing to make clear, I DID NOT SAY THAT I WANT JAPAN TO SINK OR PERISH ... I do hate Japan for what they did... yEs, WHAT THEY DID... I m not saying they are the only country who is capable of committing evil... everybody had their shares of violence and killing in a war, and sometimes more than that ... but it undeniable that their many famous, or infamous acts in WWII bought a lot of pain and suffering to the world, this I'm saying as an Asian, somebody who lives in a country which was once an invaded colony also... it is not about skin and cultural differences, we r all Asians... but the humiliation our ppl once suffered under them, easily supported by any documentary evidence or photos, goes beyond any racial or enthic group issues... and it is indeed true that they are cruel, or at least most of those who are involve in e invasion are... they took pleasure in killing, raping and torturing, they treat their victims like dogs etc ... but I won't go into details anyway ... whats done is done, for whatsoever purpose it is ... the damage had been deeply rooted... some less while others more... I m in no position to say what is felt because I havent been there myself... but to round it all up, there is such a thing call karma and Japan happens to be on the very down side of it...

reply

enough out of you, you racist!!! societyHITLERrain they should call you D:

reply

I am not racist... but I don't see any point in urging anymore, its been one long tiring drag, the people here are the ones keeping the arguments going ... I can see that many of you here clearly love and worship Japan and that anything said negatively about them is bound to be render wrong or racist... whichever, I don't care anymore and if you want to call racist or Hitler, I think anyone of them taking part in this thread qualifies more than me... I don't begin this thread for the purpose of slamming, hurting or attacking anyone, believe it or not ... but anyone seriously taking offence, forget everything that I've said here, right down to the very initial posting ...

And guys, back to the movie? I just managed to see it on YouTube and found it way better than movies like THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW and ARMAGEDDON, why wasn't this Japanese gem shown in the UK? Proves there's more to Japanese cinema than anime and Godzilla!

No doubt there will be a US remake of this called THE SINKING OF LOS ANGELES or something stupid . . . hang on, there already is, isn't it called 10.5 with a follow-up called 10.5 APOCALYPSE, with very dodgy science?! Now I see where they got the idea . . .
